Trying to stay as far away as possible from this confounded English department, last year I found myself taking some Classics courses. We read all the old Greek tragedies and Roman epics; but we also read some Roman satire.

Reading this Comedy of Errors I am reminded quite of the Roman satire. Many of the aspects are there. The play does not take place in Rome, as none of the satires did, there is slapstick humor, the aspect of the clever slave(s) who drives the action forward, the sort of bumbling nobles.

What differs though, is the absence of Gods, or magic. The mystical is replaced by the explainable. Whereas in a Roman or Ancient Greek play someone would have been turned into an ass or a bird or something in order to cause chaos, it here comes in the form of twins separated by the circumstances of life.

There are, as has already been said, many twins to be found in this play. However, what
