I was in town today so I thought I would be nosy and have a look at a Canon 40D. I expect temptation would get the better of me if it weren't for my lack of money.

I have a 400D, which was Canon's entry level DSLR in 2007. The next stage up from that is the 40D. They have both been superceded by the 450D and the 50D. The 50D is about twice the price of the 40D at around £1,000 so I'm not even interested in the 50D.

Anyway, I had a play with a 40D using my own lense and memory card. It seems like a decent upgrade but I wouldn't really be able to tell until I get out and use it. One of the main points I wanted to look at was high ISO performance.

This first picture is the 40D at ISO1600 in fluorescent shop lighting. (100% crop) Jessops don't let people go outside with any of their equipment. There's a shop a bit further along that doesn't mind people standing outside the door but they didn't have a 40D.

This next one is my 400D at ISO1600 in the sunlight. (100% crop)

It's not really a completely fair comparison because they aren't under the same conditions. But there's an obvious difference. The 400D has a lot of "sparkle" to it, whereas the 40D has some colour noise but it's less pronounced.

Canon have recently ended a £60 cashback on the 40D and I have a feeling they'll be putting their prices up with the falling pound. Sad

But I shall continue dreaming for now. Smiley

You're right, the difference is striking. How much are both the 400D and the 40D over there?

I don't think many places sell the 400D new any more. When I got it I paid £400 with £50 cashback. (£350) The 40D body-only is about £570. That means it has no lenses, but that doesn't matter because I have some already.

I could probably get £200-250 if I sold the 400D with the lense it came with and an extra battery. The 40D uses different batteries.

By the time I have the money to upgrade, the 50D will probably be the same price as the 40D currently is.

Next Day Edit: There are some rumours going around that Canon will be increasing their prices by 10-15% some time during February.

Hmmm, that sounds like an obtainable goal to me. Especially if you could sell off your 400D for a reasonable price.

It depends on how serious you are about photography, really. The 400D is already a great camera so you'll have to decide whether you need/want an even better one.

Here are a bunch of snow pictures from today. They are mostly of my younger dog.

This one is a crop of a bigger picture.

And this one was a 100% crop but I expect the forum will resize it to 700 wide. Right click -> properties -> copy/paste the url to get the full size picture.

Robins tend to be quite slender but it was cold, so it had plumped its feathers up. Wink

I've got more photos from today. Again, they're mostly of my dogs.

This is what it was like on the walk.

Holly wasn't sure what to do, so she growled and barked at it.

There was a foot high pile of snow, like a toddler's attempt at a snowman. It had a yellow hole in it. laugh I decided not to take a picture.

Six days after I was in Jessops looking at the Canon 40D for £569, they've put the price up to £659.  speechless I wasn't going to buy it, and I knew the prices were going to go up but it's a bit disheartening.

If you know anything about computers, this is quite funny.

(AGP was an old graphics interface. It was replaced by PCI-E. The connections/slots are different sizes. Electronics have an awful habit of not working when connections are cut off.)
