This may be mildly interesting for people with a Canon SLR. It shows the difference in quality between a 50mm F/1.8 and a 28-135mm 3.5-5.6 IS USM.


These are two photos I took in August, same subject but different lenses. These are 100% crops, so I've zoomed in to 100% then taken an 800 x 600 pixel crop.

If you look at the top of the roof you can see a definite difference in sharpness.

Lens: 50mm 1.8
50mm | 1/320Sec. | F8.0

Lens: 28-135mm 3.5-5.6 IS USM
Polariser used, hence the darker blue.
38mm (Thought it was nearer 50mm, but close enough) | 1/80Sec. (Polarisers reduce the light by 2 stops so the shutter speed will be slower) | F8.0

Yeah, that doesn't surprise me, fixed lenses will always be sharper than zoom lenses.  Adding a polarizer in front of the lens can also reduce sharpness.  The zoom pic isn't bad for being a native rez crop.

I realise the polariser can reduce quality by being an extra bit of glass between the sensor and the subject. The difference bwteen a zoom and a prime - is that because the elements in a zoom are able to move back and forth, so could be slightly misaligned?

My understanding of it is that zoom lenses have a lot more pieces of glass in them to allow it to be a zoom lens where as a prime lens has less.  I didn't look it up, but for some reason the numbers 11 elements for zoom and 5-6 elements for prime are sticking out in my mind.
