Here is my new camera:
http://www.usa.canon.com/...yid=145&modelid=16719
I haven't gotten it yet, but it seems pretty nice. I thought for about 2 seconds about spending the money on an SLR, but I'm just not that serious about photography at this point in my life.
Seems like a great model to me. I've got a Canon aswell, but one of those slim Ixus models (An Ixus 75)
I was thinking about saving up some more aswell, to get the EOS 400D (That's the Canon Rebel series in the US I think) but I realised there are other things I want more than an SLR camera (although a nice thing to have). Nobody can have it all in life

I've decided to go a little cheaper with my camera. I'm going to go with this model instead:
http://www.usa.canon.com/...yid=145&modelid=15655
I think that at some point, I'd like to drop some bigger bucks on a dSLR, and this one actually has gotten better reviews than the SD890 IS (the model I was looking at before). I don't need 10MP for anything, and the 3.8x zoom will be appreciated (the 890 only had a 3x). Oh, and it looks way nicer, in my opinion. The black back really turns me on

A smart decision of not spending too much money on this one if you'll get a dSLR eventually. And you're right, it
does
like nicer than the other model.

Just so you know, compact cameras work best in the 8-10MP range. Because the sensor sizes are the same, any more is only crammed into the same small amount of space which reduces quality. The expensive dSLRs have a "Full Frame" sensor which means it's 35mm, like film. Entry level dSLRs mostly have a 10/16th size sensor which essentially means the photo will be "closer" to the subject. Think of cropping a photo by 10/16ths. (There was a good illustration of that somewhere on the internet...) Compact cameras have even smaller sensors, so you can see where they lose quality with more pixels.
Dad bought mum a 12MP compact camera last year and it takes decent photos but once you zoom right in, you see a lot of noise and it's not very sharp.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I found out in my research - essentially that an 8 MP camera is every bit as good as a 10 or 12 MP camera (unless I'm making huge posters or something). That's the reason I decided to go with the less expensive 8 MP model, rather than the 10 MP I was looking at. I don't need anything super special right now, but i wanted something to hold me over until I had the money to buy something nicer down the road. Also, I'm going to Portland at the end of the month, and would like to have something to take with me (outside of my shitty 2 MP camera phone).

For reference, I just printed a few pictures out in large format to hang on the walls in my apartment. The 8MP XTi prints were perfect all the way up to 20x30. The 4MP Fuji that I had a few years ago printed ok at 16x20.
