This thing is waaaaaaay too cool.  I don't even like PS2 all that much, but I want one of these badly for some reason.

Quote
It appears that the new PS2/Two is shipping earlier than its expected November street date. GAF forum member Retro sent in a tip that the Toys'R'Us in Northern Indiana has already received its allotment and has begun selling them. My local EB in Toronto will be receiving their units tomorrow. I decided to take advantage of a deal that EB is offering with regards to trades: your old PS2 + 5 games with a trade value of $10 = new sleek unit. The redesigned system will be selling for the same price point as the old PS2, $149.99 USD/$199 CDN, if you are unwilling to part with your hard fought launch system due to sentimental attachment and/or battle scars.

It is highly likely that the early shipment is intended to cash in on Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas sales as well as get a head start on the Christmas buying frenzy. This new PS2 uses a flip-top instead of a tray system and is about 230 mm (W) ×28 mm (H) ×152 mm (D). For all you folks that use the Imperial, rather than Metric system, that translates to 'small and sweet'. It weighs about 900g (45% of the current model) and is much quieter. Another bonus is that the online adapter has been absorbed into the system, so you can take on opponents around the world right out of the box. It should be noted that the existing Multitap can not be used with the new version due to a difference in design. There has been a new one designed to fill that gap as well as a new vertical stand

I'll never understand people that buy the same console twice, because it has 2 different looking versions. I don't even think it looks that good. For the PSOne they at least changed the design, instead of just flattening the existing model.

Why have the 2 NES and SNES models? or the 3 Genesis models? the 2 PS models? the 1000 different GBA & SP models? etc etc. Because they are different thats why.
I don't plan on getting this until later unless i get one for Xmas. I would like one though

Well, I can understand having 2 nes' snes'  or genesis' now, because they're dirt cheap. But that ps2 thing is 150 bucks.

Sounds like a sweet deal to me. But first I need an old PS2 and five games.

considering that my original ps2 is broken (laser issues) i wouldnt mind getting this since the online adapter is built in. hopefully it wont break out of retardacity like the ps2 did for so many people.  it does look a little less cool without the blue ps2 logo on top (side for you vertical types), but the size, noise and adapter is an improvement

edit: i just thought of how weird it would be to vertically put a disc in a flip door instead of a tray, it would fall over from the force required to push the cd onto the round-holder-thing.  i could stand my ps2 with out buying a stand and could put it between other things(like consoles) on a small shelf  easily, but the stand would be required for this new model, taking up a lot more space, and the flip door wouldnt be able to open if blocked.  the flip door just eliminated most of the ps2's design advantages

No gear for a CD tray means much longer life also.

I actually had got to see one of these at our recent show. And I also got to ask a few questions of the Sony rep, according to him there is supposed to be some use for the hard drive with the system in the future, but as of now, if you have a hard drive, you can't use it on this system. That to me says they either hadn't thought it through or they don't plan on using it in the future, hence the GT4 online play being removed because you won't have the hard drive to use with it. Stupid Sony.

I wonder if existing stocks of the PS2's will be discounted now that a new variation is out? I've been waiting for such a time to get one myself, especially since the open-architecture promises of the PS2 and beyond seem to be slow in coming.

The old version has been discontinued actually for some time. I'd say a few months. My store first got the new ps2 this week and hadn't had a new ps2 for around 2 months. So supply was gone, and they aren't making anymore. Crappy isn't it!

I saw these at EB Games Friday. It looks so damn fragile but I'm sure I'll end up with one one day.

@nes junkie: hey man, it's been a while!
