You're thinking of Kizuna Encounter on the Neo Geo AES.  European Release.  Four copies are known.  Sold for $12,000.

This could have been a free intrest check. I was thinking about it at work, a well known collector was thinking about selling his but didn't want to start the auction low (for fear of not getting the price for it he wanted) and didn't want to fork out the fees for a high BIN/Best Offer auction. Sell creates a name on a shady auction site and watches the bids roll in without fear of getting burned. now that ebay is having a 20 cent listing day, two things happen:

Either the seller knows it will sell and has the confidence that it will sell around the price he is hoping

or he uses the shady auction to persude would be bidders. "Hey, it sold for over 20k, get it here for a steal!"

conspiracys abound!
