Preliminary autopsy findings concluded a Rancho Cordova woman who competed in a radio station water-drinking contest before she was found dead Friday showed signs consistant with water intoxication, Sacramento County Coroner's Office authorities said Saturday.

The results of a preliminary investigation released Saturday showed evidence "consistent with a water intoxication death" in the death of 28-year-old Jennifer Strange, Sacramento County assistant coroner Ed Smith said.

Smith said the autopsy found no traces of "life threatening medical conditions" that would have otherwise explained Strange's sudden death.

Strange, 28, was found dead inside her Astral Drive home in Rancho Cordova Friday afternoon. Her death came just hours after Strange participated in a radio station KDND 107.9 The End contest, testing contestants to drank as much water as they could without going to the bathroom.

The winner of the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest would take home a new Nintendo Wii video game system.

Strange's co-worker at Radiological Associates of Sacramento Laura Rios said Strange participated in the contest Friday morning, then was heading home when she reportedly called her supervisor in terrible pain.

"She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad," Rios said. "She was crying and that was the last that anyone had heard from her."

The supervisor called Strange's mother, who went to her daughter's home and discovered the body.

Sacramento County Sheriff's Sgt. Tim Curran confirmed Strange's death Friday, but said there were no immediate grounds to begin an investigation.

According to contest participants, 17 to 20 contestants took part in the competition in a room at KDND's Madison Avenue studios. The contest broadcast during The End's Morning Rave program began around 6:15 a.m. as contestants were each handed eight-ounce bottles of water to drink every 15 minutes.

Fellow contestant James Ybarra of Woodland said he met Strange at the event and had no idea of the potential danger of water poisoning. "They were small little half-pint bottle so we thought it was going to be easy," Ybarra said. "They told us if you don't feel like you can do this, don't put your health in risk."

But after 90 minutes of drinking, Ybarra decided he had had enough. "I tapped (out) after five (bottles)," Ybarra said. "My bladder couldn't handle it anymore."

Ybarra said after he quit, the remaining contestents were given even larger bottles to drink to stay in the competition. Strange was still in the contest when he opted out.

"I was talking to her and she was a nice lady," Ybarra said. "She was telling me about her family and her three kids and how she was doing it for kids."

Ybarra said before the contest, he did not read a liability waiver form handed to him by station personnel before signing it. Ybarra said he was surprised by the physical toll he felt after the contest.

"I was kind of out of it yesterday. I was just drained. I was just going to the bathroom," Ybarra said. "I wasn't feeling well and I actually fell asleep. I woke up with a headache (Saturday) morning and then took a couple of aspirins."

Ybarra said he was unaware of any medical personnel on hand to monitor the contest.

In a brief written statement issued Saturday, Entercom Sacramento VP and market manager John Geary expressed sympathy for Strange's family.

"We were stunned when we heard the news," Geary said. "We are awaiting information that will help explain how this tragic event occurred."

"They should have had a physician there, some type of statement or as to this can kill you. You can die from this," Strange's friend and co-worker Tracy Beam said. "People have died from this before and here we are. We don't have our Jennifer."

"I believe everyone should just be fired and let go from that radio station," Beam said. "It should be the end of The End."

I read this on joystiq. Rather sad, I'm sure most people are scratching there head wondering how the hell you die from drinking too much water, but just remember-- drinking distilled water is really bad for you.

Here is the news report regarding it:

This comment on joystiq was funny in a bad kind of way.

"People prepared to die for a Wii? Nintendo is kicking some serious ass."

I agree, it's terrible, and from the sound of it, the radio station should have definitely taken more precautions as well as inform the contestants better as to the potential risks involved.

Thin your blood out too much and I guess that's what you get.

Let's see if Jack Thompson gets involved with this "Video game related death" Wink

!!! WARNING! SCIENCE LESSON AHEAD !!!

It has to do with Osmosis and Equilibrium. Yes you are 75 percent water, but you are only 75 percent water. Your cells have a lot of nutrients inside of them, and they stay in the cell because your blood also has these nutrients, and    they exist in about the same concentration inside and outside of the cell. The cell needs its nutrients through Osmosis and diffusion. There is this thing about solutions-- they like to exist in equilibrium. So if you have a very dilute blood your cell osmose water into it to balance it's solution concentration with the concentration of the blood. If you've drank too much water your cells will actually osmose so much water that they explode, causing an unfortunate mortality.

!!! END SCIENCE LESSON !!!

That's actually an episode of "ER" several years ago (when it was actually good) where some kid was trying to flush out all traces of marijuana by drinking bottles and bottles of water and it almost killed him.

My friend's sister had water poisoning a few years ago. She had to go to hospital to be monitored for a while but it wasn't too bad, so they sent her home at the end of the day.

There was a thing on TV a while ago, possibly the news. A theatre actor drank too much water during a show because of the hot lights and he had to go to hospital.

That really is tragic...
I feel really sorry for the kids too.
I hate the name Wii and this wouldn't of happened if a sensible name had been used, but you wouldn't think you would have to make a systems name idiot proof from a radio stations doing something like this would you?

As a person that drinks the recommended 64 oz/Day, I only recently found out about the effects of too much water a couple of months ago.

For those of you that drink water regularly, it's recommeded to be sure to get in your daily allotment throughout the day. And to not drink water (or water-based beverages) after 7PM or else it could interrupt your sleep (i.e. getting up in the middle of the night).

So sad to hear about this lady.  I believe they should have had someone on hand watching over the participants and had information handed to them about symptoms of water sickness.  I've seen people in the military become violently sick from drinking too much water.  The reason why they drank so much ?  Drug screen.   The military requires a drug screen every six months to a year depending on service.  The only thing different then other drug screens is they watch you go.  You have someone standing beside you making sure the urine is leaving your body.  This causes extreme stagefright in some.

Ten fired over death

Ten employees of The End (KDND, 107.9 FM) were fired Tuesday and the "Morning Rave" morning radio show has been cancelled in wake of a water-drinking contest Friday that left a Rancho Cordova woman ill hours before she died, apparently of water intoxication.

Jennifer Lea Strange, 28, drank one and three-quarters of a gallon of water - according to another contestant - Friday morning during a "Hold your Wee for a Wii" contest in which competitors had to drink as much water as they could without going to the bathroom for a Nintendo game system.

Strange is a mother of three childrens, ages 11 months, 3 and 10. Her family has maintained public silence about the death, save for a prepared statement attesting to Strange's kindness and dedication as a mother.

Monday afternoon, a spokesman for the radio station said that the station had suspended the morning show pending an internal investigation.

The show's disc jockeys - who go by the names Trish, Maney and Lukas - and morning personalities Carter and Fester would not be heard on the radio until the investigation ended, the station said. A spokesman said Tuesday that he could not reveal which 10 employees had been dismissed. However, the "Morning Rave" link on the station's Web site was missing Tuesday afternoon. The myspace.com social networking site for the station no longer listed morning DJs Trish, Lukas or Maney as its "friends."

Coroner's officials said Saturday that Strange's autopsy revealed no life-threatening medical conditions and appeared "consistent with a water intoxication death." It added, however, "the final cause of death will not be available for several months."

Sacramento District Attorney's spokeswoman Lana Wyant said no findings on the case have been sent to her office for review.

"There are times we initiate investigations on our own," she said. "I'm not sure this would be one of them."

I'm glad you posted this though Tan as the news didn't go anywhere as in-depth as your source.

I'd have to say no, as they would of probably of called her the winner of a radio contest rather than a radio contestant
