If he had been stabbed almost ANYWHERE else he would have survived. Sting ray venom only causes discomfort and pain, it's the hole in the heart that done him in. Unlucky is all. It went into his heart, he pulled the barb out, lost conciousness and never woke back up.

It certainly was unexpected and sad.
Saw the public memorial on the news, his daughter was really brave and gave a long speech she had written herself. She did a great job, and said she'll continue living his dream more or less.
