DS Lite cracking ?!?

From a Gamespot article:

"Also on Monday came news of a potential PR disaster for Nintendo's hot-selling DS Lite portable. Reports from around the Internet began documenting horrified DS Lite owners' accounts--and photos--of cracks on the handheld's left screen hinge. Nintendo said the number of complaints it received represented less than 0.02 percent--or less than one in 5,000--of the DS units it sold in the US.

A flat $50 fee would be required to fix any cracked units, Nintendo said, because a cracked hinge "in no way impacts the gameplay or integrity of the DS Lite." Later, rumors circulated that Nintendo would begin fixing cracked DS Lites for free, but Nintendo representatives contacted by GameSpot could not confirm those reports."



Anybody own a DS lite? Have you noticed a crack? I know I want one eventually. But I will wait until they come out with a model in a color or theme that I want.

Also no problems with mine here.  I'm not sure where I read it, but I've also heard reports that they'll replace them for free.

I've heard the story but I haven't heard that they will fix for free, which I think they should.

I have a dslite, my wife has a dslite, and my niece has one as well....no problems just yet...of course I don't spend much time looking at the hinges....the screens are so pretty.

Well, my dslite got a crack like a week after i posted that it had no cracks.  But it really wasn't a big deal.  just cosmetic.  Well, I have been playing this thing everyday since i bought it at launch.  I have been really busy lately and did not play it on thursday of this week.  On friday i started it up and noticed a oval in the center of the top screen and I don't know how else to describe it.  It is some sort of damage. 

Anyway, I called Nintendo immediately and the lady said she would do me a real big favor and fix it all for free.  She said that in the future damage to the screens are usually not covered under warranty, but, since i had a cracked hinge, this could have led to screen damage. 

I don't know if this is really true, but I take really good care of my dsl and there is no way that I could have caused any screen damage.  I'll try to take some pics before I send it off.
