Since I've had high hopes for some games in the past to only be let down by them at release, these days I pretty much check out ratings pretty thoroughly before buying, at the very least to get an idea of how much I'm willing to pay for a game even if I don't buy it at release.

I don't really trust reviews myself...it seems that around half the time I have a differing opinion from that of the reviewer, so I just don't bother.

Generally when i am buying a game i will want to know what other people think about it before picking it up just to find out it sucks.

There are always some exceptions to this rule though.

I always look at the reviews, I just like to see what everyone else thinks. I don't care what everyone else thinks but I generally like to see an overall scoring.

I tend to wait for $10 or less.  If the game doesn't do well or sucks, then it hits the $10 or less range rather quickly.  Usually in about a year or so.  While great games like Kingdom Hearts (released 2002) still commands a price between $15 and $20.

I will buy almost anything under 10. If it is a game I really want I usually have read some reviews but they don't really matter.

I sometimes check out reviews, but not because I have a hard time deciding. There are usually only 4 or 5 console games that I buy per year for full retail price when they come out, which are ones I'd get regardless of any review. Everything else I usually wait until I can get it for at least $15 or cheaper. I might check out reviews for games that I haven't heard too much about as a way to see what kind of games they are. I don't care too much about overall review scores.

I check what actual people think of the game, not necessarily what "proffesional" reviewers think. There are only some profesional review sites/mags that I trust as unbiased. I trust Gamespot the most and have agreed with pretty much all of their reviews, except some reviewers, such as Bethany M whom I used to flame on gamefaqs before she became a lead mod, has terrible terrible taste.

So in other words, I just see what people who aren't payed for their reviews think, then go to Gamespot and see what they say.
