Some zombies plod along with their arms out stretched moving slowly. Most modern zombies move quickly. I think the directors/writers realised they aren't so scary if you can just run away from them.
Less undead rotting corpses with deteriorating bodies and more leprous lunatics with rabies. Personally I like a happy medium, like in Day of the Dead where "Bob" while not agile, was able to handle a gun with memories of his past life. Sure you could run away, but the terror came from the fact that there was no where to run to. It raises the tension when the menace moves so slowly "en masse". You stare death in the face for a lot longer than what's mentally healthy. Like a psychological experiment you get to watch the survivors fall apart at the seams waiting for the inevitable.
