In light of a line of remarks in the random thoughts thread, I thought it would be a good idea to talk about everybody rating theier games or games they have played.
If you are rating games, then a big thank you! and keep it up. If not, then take advantage of this cool feature.
It is very important that you really think about the score you give a game. Basically you dont want to give a bad score to a good game just because you want your favorite game to rank above it.
Anybody else want to chime in on this?
Maybe we can use this thread to discuss what current rankings are and why?
I would also like to see a system for ranking games discussed

Yeah people need to just wait until lots of votes are in. Right now with three votes the minimum to show up you're going to get good games that have been rated by 20 people lower than weird games that have been rated by three who really like it.

Super Mario World is the best SMB game and maybe Mario 64 second, but who in the world thinks SMB 3 was the best?

Almost everyone (although I agree with you on SMW). It's the best-selling Mario game (and I think best-selling game, period) ever, so I would hope it's well-liked.

Tetris sold 33 million copies, SMB 3 sold 18 million.
But that doesn't mean SMB 3 > SMW. That was a completely different time, when everyone had a NES.
I don't know if I'd agree with your 'almost everyone' comment. I've looked at a few top 100 of all time lists. IGN for example has SMB 3 at 20 something and SMW at 5.

I like SMB3 better because of nostalgia reasons.

I think the real travesty here is that the best game ever (Phantasy Star) only has a rating of 75% and doesn't even come close to making the top 100.
Booo hisss.

Dammit!
You got me there. Either way, I know of lot of people who really like SMB3.
Also, I just went through my collection and rated every game I knew enough about to do so. Gotta do my part!

Personally, I find SMB3 to be better than SMW. Although nostalgia has something to do with it, the idea of transforming into various creatures was pretty awesome, too.
When I rate games, I find that I give either too good of a score or too bad of a score. I'm working on finding an equilibrium, but I still want to be very cautious on games getting a "perfect" score.

I sometimes find myself in the same boat of being too generous or to strict when rating games. I have improved alot since coming to rfgeneration. Actually rating a multitude of games, you get an idea of what does and does not "make the grade".
Getting the members here to start rating games is a start. Getting everybody to use the same guide lines (or approximates) will be even better |D
Perhaps we should go over what categories you should be looking at while rating or even reviewing a game?

Why should there be some arbitrary guide line set up?
Vote it however you like.
If you really enjoyed the game vote it high.
If you really didn't like the game vote it lower.
Just don't ber a jerkoff and boost a game or drop a games rating high or low to try and off set the average.
It is an average for a reason.
If you think you can be fair and balanced(think Fox News HAHA) write up a review so people can make a desicion based on some facts rather than just numerical opinions.

I've meant to write reviews but I never got around to it.
I find with most games, even if I hate it, the lowest I usually something give is like 60% Must be from judging little kids Tae Kwon Do tournaments where the average is 7.

The average is generally a 7 for some reason.
Even in school average is 70% or a C.
I have a NES game at 5%. I rated it so high because your ship flies and shoots.
Other than that i have never been able to get anything else to EVER happen.
I just checked and the game is Star Voyager.
I don't know who rated it so high to balance it out to a 40something%
Maybe they know something i don't and got to see an enemy or something?
