So I recently saw Straw Dogs, and it got me thinking about movies that are really tough to watch because they make you feel so horrible about existence, humanity, etc.  I'm curious what other movies people have seen that made them feel this way about one thing or another.  Any "recommendations"?

They should be good movies on their own merits.  I'm not looking for stuff that is bad.  Two other great movies that I can think of off the top of my head that also happen to be depressing are Pi and Requiem for a Dream.

All three of these movies are of course most affective when watched alone.  In the dark.  At 3:00 AM when the rest of the world is asleep and you have no one to cry to.

I can't say any movie has made me want to die. Graveyard of the Fireflies was a really sad movie but a good movie.

Requiem for a Dream was one of those movies that punches you in the stomach and makes you feel sorry for humanity.

The Robin Williams movie about how he dies in a car crash then goes to heaven and has to watch his wife suffer and eventually commit suicide over his death is really touching and thought-provoking, but God is it sad.  Cube Gooding, Jr. was in it too.  I'm not sure of the name, but I'm pretty sure it was released in the late 90's.

Yeah, it is, but sometimes life can be such a bore that I have to have some unrealistically portayed emotions and events to keep myself sharp.

Powder I think it could quite possibly be the worst movie of all time.

I thought Kung Pow was kinda funny.  One of the special features on the DVD I have is an extra audio track for the movie that plays what Steve Oedekirk actually said so they could dub over it with the real dialogue.  He says some really random stuff...

I originally thought that this post was about movies that are so bad that it's discouraging to know that people would actually pay to see them...i.e. Big Fat Liar, White Chicks, Charlie's Angels, The Day After Tomorrow, etc...

I saw Requiem for a Dream when it came out in the theatres back in 2000. And I thought that if Shakespeare was alive today, only he could write something this tragic! This is one movie that beats the snot out of you! Even though I own a copy of it on DVD, I still haven't gotten the stomach back to be able to sit through it again...even though Jennifer Connelly is in it...hoowah!

A very strange yet heavy movie that I actually have watched several times is Mulholland Drive. Naomi Watts....hoowah!
