Check these sales out for the week coming up to Christmas.  The DS sold just under 600,000 units.  Holy freaking crap.  The PSP is certainly getting further and further behind, at least in Japan.  What's even more hilarious is the Xbox 360 sales.  In a week where the 5 1/2 year old PS2 sold nearly 100,000 units, and the DS approached 600,0000, the 360 had a whopping 5600 units sold.  Microsoft, please just give up on Japan.  They don't want to play a new Tiger Woods game or some totally generic FPS.  Kingdom Hearts II sales were also impressive, though I think that is to be expected for Japan.

My, not much Xbox love in Japan at all.  141 Xboxes sold.  Imagine the kids that were pissed Christmas morning when they got them.  |D

^^^LOL^^^

I am surprised to see that "Work Your Brain" so high up on the list.
With all the games that are out something like that comes in the top 10.

This is a question that people constantly ask the answer to, but sadly there really isn't a good answer.  There are a few groups who sort of track video game sales, but they only publish numbers quarterly at best, and even then they don't actually include all retailers.  One omission is the biggest video game retailer in the country - Wal-Mart.

So, long story short is there is not a decent place to get info on video game hardware or software sales.  All you can really hope is that the companies themselves release data, that it is accurate, and that it isn't completely worthless (like Sony's constant hyping of "shipped" units).

Was there some special deal going with the DS? I can imagine it outselling the other systems, but this is absurd if the prices and such are the same there as they are here.

There was no deal that I am aware of.  Perhaps they have a Mario Kart bundle like we do in the states, but I'm not sure of that.  Even that wouldn't account for the crazy numbers.  The week up to New Year's saw another 400,000 DS units sold, and Japan is now out of stock in many places.  There would have been more sold.  Crazy.

The week before the DS sold 600,000 copies it sold 300,000 systems, so boy are they moving systems over there. What's even more amazing is that right now Animal Crossing and Work your Brain have sold more copies over there than Mario Kart, and Work Your Brain is only one of many games released in the Brain Training Series. I don't know what Nintendo is doing right over there, but whatever it is they should try to translate it to over here.
