^That electric car v Fererri v Porche thing is stupid.  All the guy did is take an Ariel Atom and put a large electric motor in it.  The Atom beats the Fererri and Porche in a drag when its powered by a Civic engine.

Add in the fact that electic motors don't need to shift and have a TON of instant power, there is no comparison.

How about comparing them at the top speed? The electric car doesn't stand a chance.

Now the Telsa on the other hand has some style to it, and might actually be practical. (i.e. it has a roof.)
They just need to work on the price a bit.

And that is why they are better.

I don't know of an instance where you would break 130.  But I do know that you can never have enough acceleration.

I'm not saying I wouldn't enjoy it for the 30 minutes it can run on one overnight charge.  I'm just saying that internal combustion is still more fun because you can refill it.

Batteries
And that is why they are not so good.

That, and the battery modification made the $40,000 Atom into a $150,000 car. (iirc from the video.)

Cost will come down with time.

^250 if you drive it like an 80 year old.
I would imagine that the battery dies well before that distance in drag races.

Oh come on, you aren't being fair.  The same thing goes in any car.

Yeah, but you can refill the gas tank in less than 8 hours.  In fact, it only takes ~5 minutes.

The thing is, these are prototypes more than anything.  They prove that it can be done.  The tesla roadster is a sports car.  It designed to compete with the muscle of tradational sports cars.
"Full-charge time: 3-1/2 hours"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla_roadster

But wait, whats this!?
"In 2007, Altairnano's NanoSafe batteries are rechargeable in a few minutes, versus hours required for other rechargeable batteries. A NanoSafe cell can be charged to over 80% charge capacity in about one minute."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_car

Sure, we aren't at the point where electric cars are going to compete with ICE power cars as a viable means of mass transit.  But advances in the field will soon change that.

(I'm not going to make any claims, since it hasn't been done yet, but if you watch the Tesla Roadster video again, at the end the CEO claims that their solar option may produce more power than what you use to drive to work.  Although thats horribly subjective, it still stands to take away a large chunk of time that it takes to charge the battery.)

^I hope so, because I would buy one if it was the same or better than a normal internal combustion car.

The general public won't though.  Electric cars will have to be BETTER to win over the majority of the public, or at least people set in their ways.

I havn't looked into it, but I wonder how many people reject CVTs because the car doesn't shift.
