Anti-collecting

I was actually browsing around for some info about the Acorn Atom, when I randomly dropped by this guy's page, with a section about why he thinks collecting is 'bad'.
An interesting read from the other end of the spectrum:

It's well written, but I don't really agree with everything he's said.
Prices do fluctuate on ebay. There will always be new bidders coming along overbidding everyone, & collectors willing to outbid others to complete that collection, but that's what one must deal with if they themselves want to collect these same items. It sounds alot like sour grapes to me, whining over the prices things now cost.
Trying to justify his opinion, of if you're not going to use something it shouldn't be expensive is just plain stupid. A $500 plate you don't eat off of is not stupid, if you get some enjoyment out of owning it & admiring it. He thinks paintings & artwork are bad in original form, but okay as a repoduction? Why because there's no money tied up in it?
It's all about money to him, and if you thought about the prices most videogame & computer items fetch, it's all peanuts compared to most other 'real' collectables anyway.

Yeah, I do think it's a bit silly him repeatedly proclaiming that collecting is a waste of time. Some might say what he does is a waste of time too. Hell, everything is a waste of time if you don't like doing it, but that doesn't mean some people don't find enjoyment out of doing things you might not necessarily like.

He reminds me sort of some of my friends who are in bands. They often get record collectors that follow them around, watch them practice, etc. They'll always make fun of the record collectors, as they see something impure I guess with owning every color vinyl Misfits record, or people who brag about having the Velvet Underground vinyl with bumpersticker still in them.
Never met anyone who disliked collectors more than my friends who are in bands.

If that guy had a proper hobby, like collecting videogames, he would have had something better to do than tell people wether or not they should enjoy what they're doing.

meh, won't sway me. I will agree that collecting is a compulsion. at least for me it is as I've collected one thing or another my whole life. but so what? if you enjoy it, do it. trying to prove that collecting is stupid is stupid.
