450 NES games completed is a huge achievement.

I’ve probably only completed about 450 games across all consoles in my entire life

Everyone has been so hard at work on these NES titles and now that we're just past the halfway mark for the year, I think it's worth a look back at what we've accomplished so far with the next installment of RF Generation 2019 NES Challenge: March-April edition. Many thanks to Disposed Hero again for the rockin' music!

@Wempster/Disposed Hero - wow, you guys killed it again. That intro with the Final Fantasy boss fight was incredible!! Love the options for magic spells, lol. You guys are amazing. Once again excellent song choices and amazing execution playing them Disposed. I'm gonna be jamming to this all week now.

@bombatomba - you bet I recorded it. I've made sure to capture video of all 450 games so far. I'll probably upload a batch this weekend that would include the Bomberman video if you want to see me botch it at the last minute (you sicko!)

@schlibby - thanks. 450 is really awesome, but I'm especially excited to pass 500 during this challenge also. It's getting super hard to find games that aren't going to take multiple days to beat though at this point so I don't know if I'm gonna get many more 3-4 game nights which is going to make this a tough thing to do from now on.

Thanks! We've already started kicking some ideas around for the next video, and I think you guys will really dig it.

Speaking of which, I've pretty much scoured Youtube for just about every NES soundtrack I can find, but if you guys have any suggestions for tracks you'd like to hear in an upcoming video, I'd love to hear them.

I am starting to see where Treasure Master got its rep from.  I can now get to near the end of World 2, but not reliably due to enemy movement being unpredictable (at least to me).  I think the only good way to play this is a strong application of finesse, which I generally don't use (I generally blunder my way through).  Despite that I think I might be able to finish this game, but it will most certainly take me another week to learn the stages and get through them with minimal damage (so I maybe try for the 1ups).

On the side I'm currently playing Super Mario Land 2 DX and Breath of the Wild in a bid to not burn out on soul crushing games, but I think I will still need to play a "fun" game next.  Anybody have any suggestions?  I was thinking Mendel Palace or maybe Super Off Road, but I am open to suggestion.

Yeah Treasure Master ramps up as you progress. Took me about a week to learn it also, playing like 4-5 hours a day.

For "fun" games there's actually quite a few awesome ones left. I can't speak to Mendel Palace, but Super Off-Road is a great one. Xexyz is another favorite of mine that switches you between platforming and shmup stages pretty neat. Widget and Rockin Kats are both fairly easy platformers if you want something less stressful than Treasure Master.

If you've got the setup for either power pad or light gun, Gumshoe and Street Cop are very interesting games and could be a good change of pace for you.

Die Hard is an awesome NES game with multiple ways to win. It's a top down (like the first 2 GTA games) action game where you get to explore a building and solve puzzles to win. NARC has a tough final boss, but the rest of the game isn't terrible and the over the top violence is pretty fun (8 bit body parts fly when you shoot a sex offender or drug trafficker with a rocket launcher).

If you want a short and sweet strategy game Overlord and Gemfire are both great. Overlord is a sci-fi game about colonizing other planets and then defending them against invaders and Gemfire is the easiest KOEI game to get into. It's about a 6-8 hour time sink as opposed to 20-40 and it's very user friendly for players new to KOEI games.

Beat Castle of Dragon tonight. It's almost like a fighting game since it's just you and one enemy on screen at a time, but there are small platforming sections (which are terrible) and occasional small bad guys in between those fights. You'd think since that was the main style of gameplay they'd at least do a good job at it, but the combat is horrendous. It's impossible to tell where hitboxes end and begin and sometimes you just take random damage from swinging your own weapon. It was a terrible game all around.

Also played a bunch of Cobra Command and made it to the final boss like 7 times and couldn't seal the deal in any of those attempts. Very confident I'll have it done tomorrow though.

That puts me at 33 games in 17 days now.

I dabbled a bit with Castle of Dragon, but I didn't like it enough to get very far. Not sure if you've played it yet, but Sword Master is a very similar game and much better than what I played of Castle of Dragon.

I haven't played Sword Master yet. You beat me to it, so it's on my 2020 playlist now.

Beat Cobra Command and Defender of the Crown tonight which puts us over 400 games now!

Cobra Command suffers from some serious design flaws in how you move versus how the screen scrolls that make it not great. I think if that issue was fixed it would actually be a fairly fun game.

Defenders of the Crown was a lot to take in initially. A lot heavier in the strategy department then I initially anticipated. Have to conquer territory, each income, raid castles, defend your keep, participate in the occasional jousting tournament, but troops and siege castles. Took many many tried to decide which method I felt was the best to take over all the castles. I eventually just went for a recruit as many soldiers as quick as possible and catapult the heck out of the enemy castle as quickly as I could route after spending a couple hours messing around with jousting tournaments to win land from other rulers. Neat game, but very clunky in several of the different play styles.

Also had some time left over after those so I tried out some more Star Soldier and much to my delight stumbled upon a warp in the 1st stage. Looked into it a bit more and it turns out there are all sorts of hidden powerups in the game, but you need to meet special requirements to get most of them. Turns out there is a shorter warp route, but it will take some score manipulation to take advantage of. Have to mess around with that to see if I can make things easier on myself.

That puts me at 35 games over 18 days now.

PS - We had a family crisis last night that is going to take some serious time from me over the next couple weeks. So please be patient with updates to this thread as I may be a few days behind from time to time until things get back to normal for us.

Tried Defenders of the Crown myself a couple of years back. It seemed like it had the basis for a good game. But I found the computer would decimate me in a very small number of turns. I got the impression you had to do the clunky mini games almost perfectly to stand a chance..

@crabmaster - I don't mind editing the initial posts with the latest updates if you want while your crisis is ongoing
