A. Deluxe Packages and Cardboard Boxes with Extra Content

01) .hack//G.U. Vol. 1//Rebirth. Special Edition. This was an exclusive release from the retailer Gamestop/EB Games. The oversized cardboard box contains a Haseo figurine and a PS2 system exclusive disc. The "Terminal Disc" is a video digest of the four prequels in a special slip cover. Available in standard and special edition. The game in the special edition is identical with the standard version. (SLUS 21258, SLUS Terminal Disc 21480)

02) Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia. The cardboard box contains a hardcover art book. Originally only sold in the special edition. An identical reprint without the box and the art book was sold 15 months after the original release. (SLUS 21445P)

03) Ar tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica. Comes in a cardboard box with the standard edition of the game, a soundtrack CD in a special plastic case with artwork, and a softcover art book. Sold in standard and special edition. (SLUS 21788P)

04) Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King. Sold in a cardboard box. The double-disc case contains a playable demo disc of Final Fantasy XII with its manual. Sold only in the cardboard box. (SLUS 21207)

05) Final Fantasy XII. Collector's Edition. This was an exclusive release from the retailer Gamestop/EB Games. The metal case with inside cover art contains a making-of DVD. Available in standard and collector’s edition. The collector’s edition is different from the standard version. (SLUS 21475)

06) Growlanser: Generations. Deluxe. The most elaborate deluxe set for the PS2. The cardboard box contains a watch in a black gift case, a soundtrack CD in a special slip cover, a set of playing cards in a box, and a ring with a chain in a black pouch. The cover of the game is dual-sided. Available in standard and deluxe edition. The game in the deluxe edition is different from the standard version. (SLUS 20758P, 20759P)

07) Growlanser: Heritage of War. Limited Edition. The cardboard box includes a softcover art book, a media disc with art and music from the game in a regular white slip cover, a keychain in a black case, two lenticular cards, and three pins. Sold only in the limited edition. (SLUS 21571P)

08) Magna Carta: Tears of Blood. Deluxe Box Set. The cardboard box includes an oversized, dual-sided poster and a softcover book that combines the art of the game with a mini-strategy guide. The cover of the game is dual-sided. Sold only in the deluxe edition. (SLUS 21221)

09) Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis. The cardboard box contains a soundtrack CD in a plastic case with a back cover insert and a front cover insert. The CD front cover is a fold-out and dual-sided. On one side are two covers for the soundtrack CD, on the other side is a mini poster with game characters. Originally only sold in the special edition. As an identical stand-alone game sold seven months after the original release. (SLUS 20735P)

10) Mana Khemia 2: Fall of Alchemy. The cardboard box contains the standard edition of the game, a soundtrack CD in a special plastic case with artwork in the back and front, and a dual-sided poster. Sold in standard edition, special edition and 'Rosenqueen' edition. (SLUS 21890P)

11) Mana Khemia 2: Fall of Alchemy. 'Rosenqueen Edition.' This was an exclusive edition with its own packaging from the retailer Rosenqueen. The oversized cardboard box contains the special edition of the game (see above) and additionally a softcover art book. Sold in standard edition, special edition and 'Rosenqueen Edition'. (no SLUS number on box)

12) Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love. The cardboard box contains the standard edition of the game, an additional game-disc with Japanese voice-overs in the regular case, a softcover art book, and a poster. Noteworthy is the oversized and extensive manual which doesn't fit in the regular game case. Sold only in the special edition. (SLUS 27037)

13) Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2. Comes in a partially see-through box with an 8 inch tall Raiho-plushie and the standard edition of the game. Sold in standard and special edition. (SLUS 21897)

14) Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga. Deluxe Box Set. The outer slip cover contains a collector's box to hold the cases for the game and its sequel. Included is a soundtrack CD in the regular game case (2-disc-case). A cardboard sleeve advertising Digital Devil Saga 2 and Stella Deus is a placeholder for the sequel in the collector's box. Originally only sold in the deluxe set. An identical reprint was sold as a stand-alone game two years after the original release. (SLUS 20974)

15) Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3. The cardboard box contains a hardcover art book and a soundtrack CD in a regular white slip cover. Sold only in the special edition. (SLUS 21569P)

16) Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES. Same special edition with identical content as for the regular Persona 3 above (see 15). Just the games themselves are different with different SLUS numbers whereas the cardboard box with the old SLUS number was used. In a strict sense not a special edition in its own right. Amazon merely replaced Persona 3 with Persona 3 FES and resealed the CE box. Sold by Amazon only for a limited time. Sold also as a stand-alone game. (SLUS 21569P)

17) Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. No extra content, just in a cardboard box. The standard version of the game was sold only in the cardboard box. The Greatest Hits version was sold without the box. (SLUS 20488, 20891)

18) Wild Arms 5. Series 10th Anniversary Edition. The cardboard box contains a softcover art book covering the entire span of the series. The title is not printed on the spine of the game case. Sold only in the anniversary edition. (SLUS 21615)

Note: 'P' (for Premium) and 'S' (for Special) in a SLUS number are on the special packaging, not on the game case and disc.

C. Variants of the Games with Extra Content

01) Digimon World 4. Trading card edition (SLUS 20836P) and standard edition (SLUS 20836), both in regular game cases. The front covers of the two versions are identical. The versions have different back covers, spines and SLUS numbers. The edition with the card says "Includes Exclusive Limited Edition Trading Card!" on the back cover.

02) Duel Masters. Limited Edition and standard edition (SLUS 20924), both in regular game cases. The two versions have different covers (front, back, and spine). The limited edition with an extra pack of cards has a holographic cover with "Limited Edition" and "Free Booster Pack Inside!" on the front cover.

03) Final Fantasy XII. Collector’s Edition (SLUS 21475) and standard edition (SLUS 20963). The collector’s edition in a metal case has a making-of-DVD, different cover art on the case (front, back, and spine), a different cover for the manual, a different disc label, and a SLUS number different from the standard version.

04) Growlanser: Generations. Deluxe Edition (SLUS 20758P, 20759P) and standard edition (SLUS 20758, 20759). The two versions have different game discs. The label art and SLUS numbers (20758B, 20759B) of the game discs in the deluxe set are different from the standard version (SLUS 20758A, 20759A). The regular case in the deluxe set with its SLUS numbers, cover of the game, and manual is identical with the standard version.

05) Inuyasha: The Secret of the Cursed Mask. Trading card edition (SLUS 20913P) and standard edition (SLUS 20913), both in regular game cases. The front covers of the two versions are identical. You are probably right. Duel Masters is a borderline case. Turn-based and other RPG elements, but lacking in a true leveling-up-system we usually expect from a RPG. Lacking a commonly agreed definition of a RPG, I kept it in the main list because I wanted to keep the recommendation character of the list. By no means are these papal lists, everyone is free to add or remove games based on their individual view what a RPG is and is not.

I have only one goal when it comes to 'complete' collections, and that is from the PS1 on a complete collection of RPGs for the dominant RPG-console, which are all the Playstations until today (PS4 will be THE RPG-console as well). For the other consoles I have the exclusives titles. I started this list more than a decade ago just because I wanted t make sure that I don't miss a RPG.

I got for the PS2 all the games (with variants and limited editions) ten years ago already, and didn't pay a lot for them at all. I always wait until games drop significantly in price.

For the PS3 I'm in the process to get all the RPG-variants and limited editions, but it's tough because there are many more
limited editions than on the PS2. (I'm a cheapskate.)

For the PS4 I gave completely up to collect special editions. The reasons: 1. Way too many, 2. too expensive and overpriced, 3. ebay scalping. The combination of all three reasons makes collecting an umpleasant experience. I just refuse to pay 200 bucks for a Ni No Kuni II with its content. Another example of a way overpriced LE. In the PS2 era i could wait a long time until a LE dropped in price and Toys R US or Circuit City or Best Buy sold it for twenty or ten dollars, but those times are over. The LE of Tales of Berseria is a good example. Sold out and immediately goes the way of ebay scalping with little prospect to come down in price.

Impressive are the number of exclusive titles as well. 80% of the RPGs listed are exclusive to the PS2. If you didn't have a PS2 as a RPGamer you truly missed out.

I had some doubts about the PS3 as the dominant console for RPGs during the first years of the PS3/Xbox360 times. Microsoft made an impressive effort to get a foothold in the Japanese market with exclusive RPGs like Tales of Vesperia, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Infinite Undiscovery, The Last Remnant and Magna Carta 2. As sales numbers for the console didn't improve, they gave up this effort very fast.

You are correct about the characteristics and differences of the two versions. I should have mentioned additionally the difference of the manuals, I will change the entry in the variants-section accordingly.

Back then when I did the lists some people maintained (or weren't sure) that the game without the soundtrack CD wasnt' a second printing but was sold this way as a variant from the getgo. I couldn't find out if that was the case or not.

If you are sure that the game without the CD was indeed a second printing I will change the text accordingly.

Indeed, that is a big mistake which really bothers me. I was so careful checking the data, but still a mistake like this happened. I made the lists more than ten years ago, I don't know what happened. The devil must have whispered in my ear!
