I don't see what the big deal is.  Most movies started off as books, just one media being transformed into another.

Movies to games, or game to movies, I don't think any are wrong. Alot of them suck, but that's beside the point. If the story is good enough, and there is enough substance to provide for an hour & half of entertainment, then why not?

But the game already told you the story AND gave you hours of awesome action inbetween. I guess they need to make more games like MGS 3 in which the story, mixed with the gameplay, is so good and well told that it puts movies to shame.

There's a fundamental difference between books to movie and video games to movies.  Modern film borrowed its narrative style directly from vaudville and later 19th century novels.  So, while books and movies are different in many ways, their style of communicating is essentially the same.

This cannot be said for many video games.  The fact that (with few exceptions) almost all of the time one spends with a game is spent outside of this narrative style (playing the game) means that the entertainment dynamic is totally different.  Converting this to the narrative style of 19th century novels and 20th century film often ends up with bad results.

Can anyone name a GOOD video game made movie?  I know I can't, and even if you come up with one, I can spit back fifteen terrible ones.

Just because there hasn't been a good movie based on a video game so far, doesn't mean there never will. I think there are plenty of games with a pretty good story, which could lead to a pretty good movie. It's not like a movie is a direct translation of a videogame. All it needs is the general outline of the story and the spirit of the videogame.

Take for example the Lord of the Rings Movies. You basically just follow a bunch of guys around who get into fights and battles every now and then. Mixed up with some love and emotional stuff. There are plenty of RPG's who follow the same 'story'line. Baldur's Gate for example.

Another example is Shenmue. There are plenty of real movies with a lousier story and lousier action than this. It would form a nice basis for a movie.

I think that in the end it all comes down to having a good director, writer and actors. And it doesn't matter where they all get their inspiration from.

About the only "Satisfactory" video game to movie translation that I know of is the first Tomb Raider with Angelina Jolie.

I review movies on a weekly cable access show for movies coming out on DVD, and I have had to endure tons of Hollywood CRAP movies over the past few years, regardless if they were video-game based or not. And I've noticed an unfortunate trend...that movies in and of themselves are LOOKING more and more like videogames, with the shoddy CGI special effects and/or their overreliance on "wire fu" action fight scenes.

Because of this, I rarely go to the theatre anymore. Fantastic Four, War of the Worlds, the Island, etc. are just recent examples of movies that put me off from the trailers alone! Why should I pay 9 bucks to watch a movie for 2 hours that looks like a video game when I can just stay home and play it as long as I like? [And snacks are cheaper at home, too]

It seems to me that the independant and foreign films are the better movies these days. Sadly, because they don't have megastudio marketing millions to promote their films, they have to rely on word of mouth.

Movies like Secretary, The Machinist, Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, Million Dollar Baby, etc.are quality movies but instead of seeing them, the movie-going masses insist on paying for crap like most of the insultingly brainless films that Adam Sandler, Wil Ferrell, and others are making. And as long as they keep forking over their money like sheep, Hollywood will keep giving them the same old crap because they're not motivated to create anything new.

And let's just look at all the remakes out there: The Longest Yard, The Dukes of Hazzard, Starsky and Hutch, Swat, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, etc... The sad state of the movie business is that there's little or no originality in Hollywood because originality is not profitable. As far as I'm concerned, LET Hollywood make as many videogame to movie translations as they want. At least it's not a rehash.

And for the record, I did enjoy Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It's one that is actually worth seeing on the big screen. But catch a matinee.

Add "Destroy All Humans" to the list of game-based movies.  I'm still hoping that the Doom movie will be good, and hoping that if the Metroid movie -- the one that keeps appearing and disappearing -- actually gets off the ground, it is good (this is unlikely).  Also a Metal Gear movie would be excellent if Hideo Kojima wrote and directed it, but he already said that he doesn't want to do one.

I thought the first Mortal Kombat was pretty good.  

I think most of the storyline from videogames which is transferred to video, comes from the FMV, and cutscenes in which you don't have any control over, & it doesn't have any dynamic to gameplay, as you are forced to sit & watch in the game itself..  It's just a movie repeating itself..

Like those 15 minute cutscenes in MGS & Headhunter. I have just about completely lost interest in modern games. I've onyl got a few I even keep around, usually sports or racing/Tony Hawks & stuff.  Most games bore me.  I pretty much sold off everything I own now except for my Atari collection.

Honestly I haven't watched many video game based movies.

Tomb Raider I've seen bits & pieces of, but never the whole thing.

Super Mario Bros, I think I watched in it's entirety, but I don't recall much of it. I do recall the main actors & honestly have never liked Leguizamo. Hopper is cool though.  

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within actually gets a fairly decent rating on IMDB, but I have never seen this one. I've passed the dvd at pawn shops before. I may end up buying to see it though, had no idea Buscemi had a part in it. Animated this one is.

I think fantasy/Sci-fi stuff has the best chance of succeeding in the movies.

If you think about it, many games themselves come from Anime/Manga's or from movies, cartoons, & tv programs. Some older comics heroes make it out from time to time, but lately most of the comic heroes are comign to the big screen, then the videogame is being based off the recent movie moreso than the original comic.  But lots of movie & comic/manga influenced games out today. And then just a few key franchise player's getting reused in games like Mario & Zelda.. There's not alot of originality anywhere nowadays.

Tomb Raiders (saw one of them ni theaters)
Final Fantasy Spirits Within (saw in theaters)
So thats what 6 movies?

I can't remember any of the other ones i have seen.
I know i didn't see Alone in the Dark or the Street Fighter movie though.

I think Destroy all Humans cuold end up like Mars Attacks.
I liked that movie too so if it ends up that way good.
Hopefully these movies to get beter because videogame movies really do have alot of potential its just that the people writing and/or directing them do a shit job.

Well, destroy all humans is based off of old b-class alien movies. The Doom movie could be okay. The Metroid movie, meh. And as far as Metal Gear goes, I'd prefer that kojima made another game instead. The MGS's are perfect as games. With awesome balance between story, gameplay and all.
