Yeah, Axiom Verge is definitely a standalone game. He technically started out making a romhack of Super Metroid, but everything about AV is original.

Well I think thats where your confused. A spiritual successor is like a sequel that isn't part of the series its being adapted from, or it is part of the series but it is a whole new set of characters that are not part of the earlier games canon at all with recycled gameplay elements and new ones added in to update it, but its also got original components but not an entirely original thing at the same time. It still has a deep connection to the series its being adapted from. Even in most cases having the same creator.

I know Wiki is a flawed source but every other game mentioned says in its article its a spiritual successor or part of the series:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axiom_Verge

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Souls
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Dead_Redemption
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_Dark
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mighty_No._9
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yooka-Laylee

Axiom is the only one whos article says nothing like that. It says it borrows elements from a few classic series like Metroid,Contra,Blaster Master,and Bionic Commando. Which is a homage to a style of gameplay.

My rule of thumb has always been "does it have any real connection to the original series/release" such as members of the development team, same publisher, characters/enemies from the series appear, etc

@Crabmaster 2000:

Tose Co., Ltd. (株式会社トーセ Kabushiki-gaisha Tōse?)  (also called Tose Software) is a video game development company based in Kyoto, Japan. It is mostly known for developing Nintendo's Game & Watch Gallery series, various Dragon Ball games, as well as other Nintendo products. Tose has developed or co-developed over 1,000 games since the company's inception in 1979, but is virtually never credited in the games themselves.
