Add a spoiler on the first post with the preferred boss run through.
Good idea! I might have to let Rich handle that one. I'm kind of a noob when it comes to Mega Man.

Add a spoiler on the first post with the preferred boss run through.
This varies per player, but I will post my preferred route as a spoiler tomorrow.

Of course it changes from player to player but there is a route in every MM game where the "correct" progression involves getting the weapon from the boss for its use on the next boss that is weak against that weapon.

Not exactly so in MM2, there can be slight variations. Not every weapon has it's best counterpart. Some are best used more than once.

You do have me there about MM2. If I recall correctly, the Metal Blade is used multiple times.

Yep, the Metal Blade is used a few times.

So I said I would post my Mega Man 2 route today, so here goes:
Spoiler
(hover to show)
1. Metal Man - IMO there is no better weapon in any Mega Man game than the Metal Blades, it's worth figuring this level out and dropping Metal Man with the Mega Buster (starting weapon). On your second encounter with him, use his Metal Blades against him for the one shot!
2. Bubbleman - 3-4 shot with Metal Blades
3. Air Man - I use the Mega Buster on him, but understand that the Leaf Shield may be the best against him, either way, I go Air Man before Heat Man to get Item #2 to avoid that long disappearing brick portion of the latter's level.
4. Heat Man - a few hits with the Bubble Lead and he's a goner.
5. Wood Man - a top tier Atomic Fire at the right time and he's toast
6. Crash Man - 2 hits with the Air Shooter
7. Flash Man - Metal Blades again
8. Quick Man - he likes to pounce on you; drop 2 Crash Bombers in that left corner to send him packing; Time Stopper also works well if you can navigate the level without using it.
I think some people go Wood Man 2nd or 3rd, but IMHO, I think that it's six in one hand, a half dozen in the other. If you take out Wood Man early, you can attack Air Man with the Leaf Shield for a quick victory, but you can't use Atomic Fire on Wood Man unless you want to jump across blocks over the huge cassavas on Heat Man's stage. Item #2 is obtained only by defeating Air Man.

I'm in man. Be honest though...I'll probably have to play these on an emulator. But I'm in.

Here's the official/unofficial speedrun route for the category "Zip Glitches" which is basically the main category everyone does nowadays. The WR is 27:49 according to Speed Demos Archive.
Here's the run if anyone is interested.
Spoiler
(hover to show)
1. Flash Man - standard weapon
2. Heat Man - standard weapon
3. Air Man - standard weapon
4. Wood Man - Atomic Fire
5. Crash Man - Air Shooter
6. Quick Man - Crash Bomber
7. Metal Man - Quick Boomerang
8. Bubble Man - Metal Blades
The pea shooter is pretty powerful in this game and takes down most robot masters fairly easily. Makes em look like a bunch of wussies.
I'm terrible at speedrunning this game but I'm trying my best to take advantage of every trick. It's not as easy as it looks....

Great idea. My favorite thing about watching speed runs is trying to pick up little tips and tricks to use in my casual playing.
That said, I'm ecstatic that I can play Mega Man games with any facility at all.

I didn't have much time to play today, but I did hop on long enough to beat Bubble Man. Only Heat Man stands between me and Wily's Castle.

Beat Mega Man 2 in a little over 2 hours with lots of screwing around and speedrun strat practice. I want to finish in less than an hour by the end of the week.
btw I'm playing on my NES. There is no other way.

I'm hoping my Blinking Light Win comes in pretty soon (it should). This will be a great way to break it in.
