Video Game Storage Questions
«

Hey guys!
I'm looking for some advice on either custom storage or where I might be able to order some reasonably priced video game storage. So my situation. I just use gigantic bookcases which, honestly, waste space and don't display all that well. I lack tools and space to really build my own shelves so that puts me in an annoying spot. I live in Atlantic Canada and I'm not sure what keywords to search for something that fits games well. Maybe some of you out there no a good website, or keywords i could use to find something to store and display my games.
Sorry for the vagueness of my thread but hopefully it makes sense to someone.

It makes perfect sense. Unfortunately I have to do pretty much the same thing with giant bookshelves. They take up way too much space so I feel your pain. I have no doubt these guys will have some solutions for you. Good luck!

if you have any video stores going out of business nearby see if they'll sell you their shelving. anything meant for DVDs works really well for the majority of games. otherwise i'd always recommend building your own, you don't know anyone with more space that you could borrow their driveway for a day to make these?

I have a couple of these, and they work great for most retro games. NES cartridges and any jewel case games fit perfectly. DS and 3DS cases fit really well also. SNES cartridges do ok, but fit a little far in the back of the shelf for my liking. And I had to take a shelf out on the bottom right to make room for my boxed Genesis and Sega CD games. Not an ideal place for them, but I had nowhere else to put them.

Unfortunately I have the same problem as you when it comes to modern games. Large bookshelves with a lot of empty space. Sooner or later I want to get a couple of large shelves with spacing designed for DVD style cases.

I have those in my living room (sold by Walmart, I think). In fact, your left shelf looks much like mine currently does. The problem is that there's a fixed shelf in the center, so you're always stuck with a CD-case sized hole there, and the shelf doesn't have any legs to keep it off the floor in case of water damage. The two that I had that were similar with rubber stoppers for legs made it through the flood much better than those did, even if it was only a 2-inch difference.
They also tend to attract dust and any other dirt very quickly. Decent low-cost solution, though I would prefer IKEA shelving over those for the same cost. Unfortunately, no IKEA on PEI.

Those both look a lot better than what I have going on! I'll try looking into them. The Walmart here in PEI is kinda crappy for media storage. It may be possible that they could order stuff from their online store to their location though. I wish we had an IKEA here :/. Thanks a lot guys!

There are a lot of possibilities if you do Site-To-Store for Walmart:

I've used a combination of these in the past, which were damaged in the flood at my house. Cheap wood, get damaged easily, but get the job done:

This looks interesting...haven't seen it at my local store:

...and this looks interesting, but way too expensive:

Target also has some comparable shelves (or used to), but they tend to have a premium on them. With that being said, if you plan to put weight on them, the Walmart shelves will bow easily, while the Target ones hold up better.

I think the best thing to do if you have children or animals at your place, is to keep your stuff up very high. my dog has chewed up NES boxes, PS2 cases, PS1 cases, you name it (cheap stuff- I don't keep my expensive stuff where he can reach it). I have a nice TV stand that has a glass door in it, so I have a few consoles behind there that my dog can't pee on, and generally I have my consoles set back kind of far and up higher on the TV stand so he's less likely to damage them.
Another thing to do is to keep everything in one room and then just close the door if you leave your pet at home by himself. Once I move into a house, I eventually want to have shelving with glass doors. there's a place called A & C Games somewhere in Canada (forgot the town) but i remember really liking their wooden shelf setup they had. theyre on one of the Game Chasers episodes
