Fun fact, this isn't a MKT Variant I was talking about. It's Konami...and green...and angry...

The Grinch has a variant? That game's fun.

The music is also good, although some of the better tunes are too short...

It really never ends.

The jewel case isn't a variant then - just the outer cardboard box and book?

Yes - The jewel case and the outer box share the same SLUS. The only difference is the barcode.
I don't know if the book is unique in anyway, but i'm assuming this:
http://www.amazon.com/How...istmas-Bear/dp/0375810129
Is the same thing.
So essentially it's a variant that can be hand assembled so long as you have the outer box.

Indeed. We seem to have confirmed the third one thanks to a GR reader, but he ain't selling.
APparently the brown disc is a few days difference date than the orange disc.
Mind sharing this information? So far, there has been zero proof for the existence of a third version. Just some pics of discs that were taken in a different light. If the file dates are only a couple days apart, this could also be caused by a wrong setting (using local filestamp instead of relative).
Also, a ringcode scan of this particular brown disc (if it exists) would be welcome.
The silver disc in black label case release does in fact exist, and it's confirmed to be identical to the Greatest Hits release. The ringcode is PSRM-004090 5 :
http://redump.org/disc/469/
The original black label release is currently missing the ringcode information:
http://redump.org/disc/759/
, but if there were any discs scanned that end with a '4' then this could disprove the existence of a third version. To scan the ringcodes on a black PSX disc, you would need to scan the disc while lighting it with an ordinary (non-LED) (flash)light. At 600dpi, the result will look similar to this:

Need to resurrect this for a moment. Does the IFPI number actually matter? Redump lists it, but what I assume are all the same version of the game have different IFPI numbers.
The letters are just designations for me to keep the discs labelled. These are all in my possession, all original black label discs, but many are differently colored from the other (printing errors? printer settings? who knows?). Some are brown, some are more orange, some look slightly off.
Mortal Kombat Trilogy E 50xx 5071
Mortal Kombat Trilogy G 50xx 5076
Mortal Kombat Trilogy D 50xx 5077
Mortal Kombat Trilogy C 50xx 5093
Mortal Kombat Trilogy F 50xx 507C (Confirmed on Redump)
Mortal Kombat Trilogy A 50xx 507F
Mortal Kombat Trilogy B 50xx 508D (Confirmed on Redump)
b. It appears that the ISO of the 'Buggy MKT" is currently only in ISO form, and was PAL.
c. I can not get the ring info to show up, trying to track down a flashlight with the proper bulb.
d. I tried burning in all 7 games into ISOs (Cue / Bin) Files and then using HexFiend to compare the files for differences, but I can not get consistent readings from the comparisons.
I'm trying one more auction, and then thinking the 'three versions' rumor is finally false.

Hey,
different ringcodes / IFPI codes indicates a different pressing of the game..
The complete ringcode will only show up if you scan the game while lighting it with a torch.. You could also try taking pictures on the ring while lighting it with an infrared torch, but that's more tricky.
An easier way to figure out if your discs all have the same version is to open each disc in IsoBuster (be sure to hit refresh after loading each disc) and see if it matches one of the 2 versions known so far:
v1.0 contents:
http://i.imgur.com/bDYc3TP.png
- 240840 total sectors with SLUS_003.30 = 27-9-1996
v1.1 contents:
http://i.imgur.com/vOiDlS7.png
- 245404 total sectors with SLUS_003.30 = 22-11-1996
Before checking the file dates, make sure that you the 'Time stamps' to 'Local file stamp' in Options>File System settings
Good luck

...and with that, a hopefully closed door on the 0.9 myth. Thanks to everyone who helped with the wild goose chase.

Thanks for that, but the only way of really clearing up the myth (and be 100% sure) is to check the complete ringcodes, not just the IFPI code in the mould/hub.
As indicated before, if you have a flatbed scanner, you could scan the disc in a dark room while lighting it with a non-LED torch, and this will reveal the actual ringcode: PSRM-004090 followed by a number. So far we've confirmed the number 5 and 10 being the non-buggy version of the game. If you happen to have discs that have the numbers 1 up to 4, then we'll know for sure that all the known prints were checked.
Too bad I dont have the buggy copies anymore with IFPI 507C / IFPI 508D, otherwise I could've scanned those myself.

I also did ISO / Sector comparisons. All came up the same values. Been trying to track down a flash light for a while, but at this point it might now be needed.
