Variation Question
«

Would it be possible to make a cart the main cart and after clicking it listing the various (or something similar) or not include variations in searches? The reason I ask is before we started adding all these screw and label variations for NES it was easy to what NES games I needed by doing a search of what isn't in my collection but now because the variations were added there are over 500 NES carts I don't have according to the database but only 200 are legitimate ones I need, the rest are variants. Thanks.

Discogs solved this problem by displaying all variations of one title under a 'Master Release' umbrella,. works well

That's the intention we're moving towards. It's actually possible now, but hidden away as a direct DB change to your profile should you want to try it.

I'll give it a whirl. Make me a guinea pig.

Okay...change made. Essentially, all it does right now is filter out everything but entries marked as "Original Release" for Software and Hardware.

Not bad, it got rid of over 200 variations. I still have some listed that are in my collection so I assume the ones in my collection are not the "Original Release" version. Is there any way to see what is considered "Original Release" because it's not listed in the title. It would be cool to incorporate a button to check/uncheck to show variations and one for homebrews.

Apparently not, some games have more than one version that is considered the "Original Release".

That's correct - typically ones released on the same day, e.g. Limited Editions. Though, theoretically, there should only be 1 Original Release for a base.

I usually mark limited editions as both variation types; I also do the same for games that were released on multiple formats but on the same system.

It's had that capability ever since we added the field, just hold down Ctrl (or the Command key if you're a Mac user like myself) to select multiple types, it's exactly like adding multiple rating descriptors.

Admittedly, I would agree with that. An example would be "10-Yard Fight". I see 2 Original Release versions, when there should only be 1. That should be fixed, and anyone can make the database edit for it - it's just a normal edit.
EDIT: There were only 2 - 10-Yard Fight and Pro Wrestling. I've fixed these.
