The game play is a little slower, but the fighting is more fast paced. More enemies on screen, better AI, larger variety of enemies....
I'm frankly surprised I'm in the minority here.
Here's my beef. You say that SoR2 "is a little slower" and that there are "more enemies on screen." I agree, and this is why I like the first game better. When the actions are slow, it's harder to take out an overy full room of enemies and therefore results in a lot of frustrating and cheap deaths. I think SoR2 is a great game, I just like the fluidity of the gameplay of the original much better. To each their own.

I think this makes SoR 2 more strategic than the first game. You have more moves available to you in the second game, and I think a large part of mastering the game is learning which moves are best for different situations. Just as an example, I usually hate using moves that take away a portion of the player's health (the special moves in SoR 2), but I've found that if you're surrounded by enemies, it's better to just go ahead and use the special move and lose that bit of health rather than take a beating from multiple enemies. Some of the other moves in the game are also good for crowd control.
I will agree that overall I probably do prefer the feel and faster pace of SoR 1 over 2, but I also like that 2 feels more strategic, hence why I said I like them both pretty much equally.

It's funny you say that, because I was experiencing many more cheap deaths in the first game. I can't tell you how many times I was positioned near a weapon and i'd try to punch an enemy in SoR1 only to be stuck on that accidently-pick-up-the-weapon-get-hit-try-to-hit-back-but-picks-up-weapon-now-im-dead loop. SoR2 just feels so much more polished to me and fixed many of those issues.

Faultiest logic ever. The weapon pickup/put down HAPPENS. IN. BOTH. GAMES! This has not been fixed in any way.
SoR2 is like a high school cheerleader, slow but pretty.
But seriously, I'm just having a little fun with you man. I like both games, I just prefer the first one more. It just feels better to me and was a more enjoyable play.
Oh yeah...... and +10 finish with no continues. Let's get ready to play what will surely be the best game in the series, SoR3.......

Not sure which Tim Curry role is more frightening: Dr. Frank N. Furter or It. That being said, I nervously anticipate SoR3 with Crabmaster next week. I haven't played it in a while, and I don't remember it being as bad as most SoR fans say it is.

It was absolutely fixed in the second game.
In SoR1 if you get punched one time you drop the weapon right where you stand. If you try to retaliate by hitting back your character will instead try pick up the weapon and you'll continue to get beat down. In SoR2 you don't drop the weapon until your character gets knocked down, so you get plenty of time to fight back without getting stuck in that annoying loop.

I just bought a copy of SoR 3 on ebay, so hopefully I'll get it within the next few days.
I just remembered that Fighting Force on the PS1 was originally intended to be Streets of Rage 4 and released on the Saturn, but Sega pulled the SoR license so they changed the name and released it on the PS1. I'm not sure if this is a well known fact or not, but I thought it was an interesting bit of trivia.

I see what you are saying RetroRage. I thought you meant that while you are in combat on top of a weapon, you wouldn't bend down and pick it up in SoR2. I misunderstood what you were describing. That is an improvement, but I rarely use weapons in either game, so it really never affected the way I played. Good point though.
Glad you are getting SoR3 Disposed so that you can join us. Great fact about SoR4, I'll have to find a copy at some point. If like to know how it is.

Thanks. I won't be able to submit any scores for SoR 3 until my copy comes in later this week, so I'll have to sit out until then. I was finally able to get a friend to come over this weekend, and we were able to finish SoR 1 co-op. Hopefully I'll be able to co-op 2 and 3 also before the month is up.
After playing SoR 2, then revisiting SoR 1 again, I think I'll have to count myself among those that prefer the second game to the first.

I think most of us are hoping that your copy of SoR3 doesn't come in this week so that we can catch up.
Nicely done! I too will be curious about revisiting the first game again to see how it holds up during Battle Royale week and playing with a friend. I still need to finish SoR1 without a continue....
I did a full update to the standings this morning, so everything should be correct, if not let me know.
Also, if anyone comes across a CIB copy (or better yet, just IB) of SoR1 [not the blue classic version] please let me know. I own the other two CIB and would like to have a nice set. Thanks.

Ha! Yeah, I figured as much. I'll probably need to keep an eye on my mailbox just to make sure nobody swipes my copy.
