The Small Scores Thread: Part 3!

I've had a pretty good last few days.  I heard a few stores broke their street date for wave 2 of the amiibos so I went looking.  Gamestop in our mall only had one Diddy Kong left and that was all from wave 2 so I got him.  A friend asked if I wanted to come over since he just got a bottle of eggnog.  While I was there he said his roomate was getting rid of a really big CRT TV and knew I used them for retro games.  It turns out it was a really nice Sony WEGA 34" tv that did High Definition up to 1080i.  This TV also weighs 200 lbs.  His roomate was happy that she didn't have to bother putting it on craigslist so she just gave it to me.  Its going to replace my 25" CRT that I have for light gun games.

While in Jacksonville today I also found a few more amiibos.  Lil' Mac at a Gamestop and Zelda at Toys 'R Us.  Lil' Mac was the very last one of any wave 2 ones they had.  All in all not a bad weekend.

All this Amiibo stuff, not really into collecting that type of stuff, but they do look pretty cool.

Pac-Man Fever is rather cheesy but I had to grab it for .99, Before almost every song it does have classic arcade sounds for that particular song about the game.

Can't pass up Board Games like these, I am going to start having a game board night at my house, I think.

After X-Mas, I think I am going to be checking out the Amazon Warehouse Deal stuff, although my PS3 is starting to sound like its about to bite the dust. I might have to save money for a new one.

@TheBoss: The songs are pretty funny, the lyrics are about how to play each game. I guess if anyone can't ever figure out the goal of Frogger they can just listen to the song "Froggy's Lament", instead of reading the instruction manual.

Quite serendipitously, I found myself in possession of this selfsame TV a few weeks back.  I, too, labored with the massive weight of this behemoth to retrieve it from a friend who was glad to be rid of it.  All the while, visions of retrogaming ecstasy danced in my head.  The good news is that the TV looks great.  It has a "Pro" setting for image quality and a 4:3 setting for screen size, both good, and my Retron 5 looks great on it.

However, there is some bad news.  One of the first things I tried was light gun games.  Absolute failure.  Nothing I could do in my (admittedly limited) fiddling with it could make the gun "fire" properly.  The culprit seems to be the very noticeable screen lag.  So, it's my sad duty to tell you not to get rid of that 25-incher just yet.

Yeah you can't use Lightguns on the HDTV models of Wega, believe me I did a bunch of research in this area, when I was picking out a TV for retro games. I don't know why, I just remember going to many forums and everyone said to avoid those if you want to use light guns.

I went to a few garage sales today and got nothing, then went to a thrift store and got something!

I had Pac-Attack noted as hard to find, plus it was the first non sports Genesis game I've seen in a while.  It looks like it goes for $5-10 on Ebay, but DP has it listed as an R6.  It seems to be one of those slightly hard to find games that no one really cares about.  Zathura was my 100th Xbox game.  Also, no PC games today.  That's a first in quite a while.

@Wempster: I've got a similar WEGA, although it's just a little earlier and has DVI that I have to use an adapter for. As mentioned, light guns are a no go. Find a PVM for some great classic play. Well worth the trouble tracking one down.

I've been so busy with Christmas stuff and having to work, I haven't been around here for a while now.  Between it all, though, I have found quite a bit of stuff to add to my collection, including something I've been looking for for quite a long time now.  This is gonna be a pretty long post, so be prepared:

For some reason, it's been an XBox/Xbox 360 sort of month and a half or so, and that trend continued.  I wish the Catherine had its original case and manual, but finding it with Lost Planet: Extreme Condition for only $1.50 together made sure I wasn't gonna pass it up.  Plus, I've really been wanting to play it for a long while now, so now I can, as soon as I'm done with the approximately 597 other games I have on the backburner.    I'm also happy to have picked up Jade Empire and Crimson Skies, as I've heard nothing but good things about them and have wanted to check them out as well, again, after the other 597 games.  And being a fan of the first Borderlands and hearing mostly positive things, adding the sequel to my collection was a must for me.

Some odds and ends that I got as well.  The two ProPads are complete, though as you can tell the boxes aren't in great shape.  They were a dollar apiece at Goodwill, though, so I'm not complaining.  And when I started collecting, I never thought that I would get so into collecting handhelds/LCD games, but here we are, about 50 or so of them in, with no intention of stopping now.  The Gameshark is my Not-So-Secret Santa snag from our very own Zagnorch, in a very nice DVD-style box.  It doesn't have the dongle needed to actually use it, but since I'm a sucker for cheat devices, it's awesome to have anyway.  And once again, thanks to Zag for the NSSS.  I remember promising to send something your way last year, but losing my job derailed that.  This year, however, I've already procured a couple of things you're looking for, and am eying one more that I hope to be sending your way before too long.

Finally, a Commodore 16.  I don't have too much experience with vintage computers, but after my recent Atari 800XL find, it made me really nostalgic for the three computers that I did have as a kid: A Tandy/Radio Shack TRS-80 (On which I had my very first video gaming experience playing Hunt The Wumpus), an IBM XT, and a Commodore 16.  After a lot of searching, I ended up finding this one on eBay for less than I've seen most having gone for, at $61.  It's complete, with the original power brick, RF cable and switch, manual, other paperwork, and the C16 Tutorial Cartridge.  It also came with a working Commodore 1541 Floppy Disk Drive that does have a bit of wear and a gouge on the top of the unit, and also still has the original cardboard insert.  The computer itself works flawlessly, and it looks like it was barely used before I bought it, with absolutely no blemishes on it at all.  Now, if only I could find an XT for less than 400 dollars...
