Hey now,

Question, how can I determine if I really have a Heavy Sixer?

6 switches of course, should have a label on the bottom of the console that reads made in "Sunnyvale, CA," and the corners should be curved at an almost 90 degree angle like the pic on the left and not angled like the one on the right:

As someone who passes through Sunnyvale every day on my work commute, I can assure you that they don't make much of anything nowadays.

What model is that?

It's a 7501, the second one I have.  The other two PS1's I have are 5501s, so nothing special.  But it still beats paying 10-20 bucks, or sometimes more, for just the console like many people and places seem to enjoy doing around here.

Is there advantage to having certain models?

The most notable difference between certain models I'm aware of is the gradual removal of jacks in the back to plug stuff into throughout the PS1's production life-cycle:

Drat, it's only a Light Sixer, then. And, it's proving to be very finicky to operate. I'm ask elsewhere on the forum if anyone knows what the problem is.

It's the original system. The 2600 was made in good ole Sunnyvale, CA, USA for a short time before it was sent overseas for manufacturing. The heavy sixer was this model and is probably the most prized system for Atari 2600 collectors. It typically goes for a bit more for this reason.

The Heavy Sixer was the very first version of the 2600, produced in Sunnyvale, CA only in 1977.
In 1978, the design was changed to the Light Sixer.

Thanks guys. I come from the console era after the Atari generation, so I don't know jack about it. I have two 2600s. One is a six switch and one is a four. When I get home today, I'm going to see if the 6 is of the heavy variety.
