So I'm getting near to needing a new set of razor blades.

Interested in using my Amazon cash to do so, I started checking out deals online. Some few hours further down this rabbithole and I start thinking I'm going to try using an old timey safety razor. They supposedly give a way better shave and are wayyyyyy cheaper.

So, today I wandered around our local antique mall and found an old Gillette double edged razor handle. It's pretty dingy and I'll need to clean it up, but it's all intact and was only five bucks.

I have some blades coming in the mail, and I figure I'll give it a shot.

Anyways, anyone else ever fallen down this rabbit hole? I'm even eyeing straight edges now.

I was going to look into that dollarshaveclub. It looked worth it. I haven't gone clean shaven in a while. Just use a electric to get that 5 O Clock Shadow look.

Yeah, dollarshaveclub is awesome.  I have the cheapest subscription ($1 + $2 shipping), so $3 for 5 blades every month is a steal.

Yeah I was looking at that too, didn't realize it was THAT cheap.

Anyhow, cleaned the handle up pretty good. There's a couple places under the "hood" that are rusty, but it's in pretty good shape. Not quite collector quality but very serviceable. Now I just wait for the blades and I can commence shredding my face off.

Hmm.  I've been thinking of straight razors if no other reason because my coarse hair wears down most blades in two shaves (starts to add up after a while) and I was told they stay sharper longer (and can actually be sharpened).  Hmm.

Straight edge was tempting, but they're more of an initial investment. You can also get straight edges with replaceable cheap blades though, I might try one of those in awhile.

At some point I'm just going to have to get more adventurous.  In my current job there really isn't a reason to be cleanly shaved all the time, so I'm saving money already, but at some point I'd like to get a real job (and get some of that real money that I keep hearing about), so I need to keep options in mind.  Plus, I've always wondered what it was like walking around all '50s style-shaved was like   Wink

Google image search "tetanus," the rest of you do not do this, it's not pleasant.

Or read this on Wiki:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetanus

I wouldn't shave with something that has rust on it. Rust isn't the cause of tetanus exactly, but still.

I go for the slightly scruffy look like Russlyman, I'm lucky it's a somewhat acceptable look nowadays. There is no way you could ever get me to shave with a straight razor. Every time I see one the only thing I can think of is getting cut, badly. I'm okay with other people bleeding, but my blood has to stay inside of me, it has places to go and things to do.

I only shave when I begin to cross the 'hobo' threshold, which is about 3 weeks for me.

Tetanus doesn't actually come from rust. Also, the rusty spots won't come anywhere near touching my face. Only the shiny outside of the razor and the brand new blades will get that privilege.

I'm anti-tetanus, I see you are part of the pro-tetanus movement though. I know your kind.

When did electric razors go out of style? Nintendo's run on electricity, and all the kids think they are gnarly.

Razors came today and I gave it a whirl. Was really easy, not sure what the "DANGER YOU WILL ABSOLUTELY DESTROY YOURSELF THE FIRST TIME" people are huffing. You can't just like zip zop your whole face in five seconds, but I don't ever do that even with the cartridges. It gave a lovely close shave and the soap left me smelling smexier than any shaving cream ever has.
