Can someone explain to me what skylander's is? I've been hearing about it a lot and see it all over the place and I'm very intrigued and I'm contemplating trying it out. Is it fun? whats it like? etc.

I have yet to play it as well. I know you need to collect mini action figure statue things. You can than put them on this "portal" so they become playable in the actual game.

Thats about all I know about it as well. I'm just curious if it then plays a lot like Pokemon stadium or if there is a story behind it. If it matters which figurines you have, etc. I looked on there site and got practically no information from it lol.

The main game is an adventure game with very light RPG elements. You and up to one friend can put your favorite figure onto the portal and that character will appear on screen and be your character for as long as you want. You can swap your figure out for a new one at any time during the game. Each of the figures/characters belong to one of the 8 different elements (fire, water, air, earth, tech, magic, death, life). You can beat the game with just one elemental character, but to unlock each area in the game and obtain all the extra items you'll need at least one of each element.
Each character has two different paths you can level them up through which will change their move set depending on your choice.
In addition to the main game you can battle your friends in another mode so depending on how you levelled up your character you'll have advantages/disadvantages against certain match ups. I havn't tried it myself, but I think your actual figure stores the character save so you can just take your toys with you and have your favorite character from home with all his skills/equipment on someone else's machine.
Its not a hard game and definitely aimed at a younger crowd, but its an enjoyable game and worth checking out if you're in the mood for a quirky adventure game.

Pokemon is a lot deeper of a game in my opinion. And much more of a Role Playing type game. They share some superficial similarities, but they are much more different than they are alike in my opinion. I'd play Pokemon over Skylanders given the choice.

If it is that basic of a game then I may stay away from it for a while. Plus it seems like a very expensive game to get into especially when the collector side kicks in and the urge to get all the figurines kicks in.

I've got a young one to play it with so its fun to help him along. I couldn't imagine playing it more than once by myself though.
The figures are definitely a lot of fun and painful on your wallet to collect.

I like skylanders a lot, it's a fun and easy game. I also see a lot of very cheap lots in the wild, so if you're patient getting started isn't too expensive.
Stores also frequently do 2 for 1 on the figures, so you can wait for those deals. ( bestbuy canada is doing it right now, and I think amazon will price match)

I managed to pick up a cheaper Skylanders set off of Amazon about a year ago. I played through the entire game with the three included figures, and I got the Platinum. I was about to start ordering the figures (I had like $50 worth in my cart) before I realized I didn't need them sitting around. I sold the starter set I had and never looked back.
I had fun with the game, and it's definitely a neat idea, but it's also a big drain on money and space. Like Crabby, I'd pick Pokemon any day of the week over Skylanders. I think Zagnorch would agree with us, too.

Pokemon games are timeless for me. I had so much fun playing those as a kid and look forward to starting them again here soon.

Cheap way for to spend hundreds of dollars for figures for a mediocre game. Like beanie babies but needed to play the game.

I almost fell for it. The starter packs were 40$ at Target this week, but I talked myself out of getting it once I saw that new figures were 10$ a piece.

CARBAG is correct that they go on sale quite often. We've got most of ours on 2 for 1 deals or second hand. $5 a piece I feel is the right price and I havn't had much trouble finding most of our nearly 30 figures for that price.
