Sony Worldwide Studios boss  says that a "used game DRM" is up to individual publishers. That is such a good thing to hear  Grin This must be a blow to Microsoft as developers and publishers alike will find that this will not be a wise choice to pull on PS4 judging by angry fans reactions to the Xbox One. Now that this is confirmed, I don't see how the Xbox One will have much success with core gamers, even though they didn't have gamers in mind when they designed the Xbox One.

The trick will be if Microsoft can wrangle some big-name exclusives. If they can convince publishers that PS4 will not be profitable compared to their own used game shenanigans, they might be able to build up a library of titles that angry gamers can't ignore.

People complained about online passes too, but they still bought the games anyways.

The passes only effect the multiplayer, with is essentially extra content, used game DRM would block playing the games single player campaign as well(unless you paid the "unlock" fee)

"Trade-in and resell your disc-based games: Today, some gamers choose to sell their old disc-based games back for cash and credit. We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers.  Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games. "

Sounds like the same shit to me.

Basically Nextbox and PS4 games are all coming with one use "online passes" until the pubs/devs say otherwise.

Here is a thought for Xbox one. What if they had an online trade in of the digital games. You can get trade in credit for your games you bought digitally. And you get a small percentage back.  For. 50.00 game you might get 8.00 or 10.00 towards your next purchase. It would probably be a limit of 1 trade in per purchase but might be an interesting idea to kick around.

Ps4 would probably get more publishers since the gamer backlash at Xbox has got to have publishers a little reluctant to go with them exclusively. Sony if they stick with discs might find out that they will get more titles than expected

Sony posted an official release on the practice of sharing a game with a friend.

very helpful!

seriously, I wonder if they're going to do the pricing scheme like the on the Vita where the download version is going to be significantly cheaper than the physical copy.  I imagine it is in their best interest to switch to digital in the long run.  Microsoft just happens to be the whipping boy who made the first move.

Meanwhile, SHARP tweeted that they thought the PS4 design looked suspiciously like their X68000 (1987-1993)

Yeah, digital is totally going to be the complete norm in less than five years.

Its already the norm. I don't think physical games are going to be obsolete for at least one more generation though.

^Which would eliminate used games entirely so I guess Microsoft is banking on digital, no?

Oh it definitely would be if not for aged gamers who can't wrap their heads around non-physical copies. I haven't bought a physical copy of a new game since Empire: Total War came out.

Some of us are slow to transition or just downright resist change. CDs are still sold too even though music has been largely digital for like a decade already. Some of us value things quite a bit differently and that's gonna effect out buying habits. As long as there is still a profit to be made for physical media its gonna keep getting pumped out. I REALLY hope that the enthusiasm shown at the Sony E3 press conference when used games were announced is gonna be backed up by consumers wallets personally.

Resisting change ain't that bad. I feel sorry for early adopters of HD DVD players for instance.

Psh, I called that one too. PS3 captured the post-DVD market by giving people cheap Blu-Ray players (people also argue "because porn chose blu-ray" but that's bullshit).

So, was it worth it for SONY? Well, I have no idea, but they certainly did win the battle, and it would be very interesting to compare what SONY has made and continues to make selling Blu-Rays as opposed to what M$ spent on losing the HD DVD market. May very well have been more profitable for SONY to lose the units sold battle in order to win the HD battle.

Again, all just uneducated reasoning, I have no idea really.
