Well, I should follow up on this news development.

I feel as though Nintendo is doing everything right. The library isnt much now, but just think aboot how it will look compared to the other guys when there systems come out. Ill have to see what Sony brings to the table this year. One thing that for sure Xbox is very disapointing. Kinect was interesting for aboot 2 months when it came out. Now a system based around it. The technology is impressive and tech geeks will love to show off their Xbox One, but its not a system for gamers. When I get home from work and want to game, I want to relax and hold a controller in my hand. NOT yell at a TV and wave my hands around like an idiot. Also the downloadable games really dont interest me, if you system crashes and you dont have your games saved to an external memory source, then your fucked. So Im really not feeling downloadable game unless its free or is the only way to play.

Nintendo has so much money in the bank, they can easily muddle along for another two generations.

What Nintendo should do:
- Get out of the hardware business
- Maybe get out of the handheld hardware business, too

Just think about it. Everyone loves the handful of great Nintendo 1st party games. They would sell loads on PS3/360. Everyone loves the handful of great Nintendo handheld games. They would sell boatloads (at a lower price) on smartphones.

This would leave Nintendo with all the software people love but without the hassle of having to make hardware.

The 3DS is selling well.  It would be an incredibly stupid business move to stop making handhelds.

You're right. I guess I should've emphasized the "maybe" in my statement. As long as their handhelds are selling fine, great. But it might still happen that people just won't buy a seperate handheld anymore and want their smartphone to do everything. If that happens, Nintendo should get out of the handheld hardware business.

They should already be out of the console hardware business, imo. The Wii U isn't selling that well and many gamers are sensible enough to realize that they should wait for PS4/720 because the vast majority of titles will be on those two systems.

Nintendo hit the jackpot with the Wii because they attracted the non-gamers to buy into the hype. Hypes only last so long though and all those same non-gamers are now not buying the Wii U. If that hadn't happened, the Wii would've been another GameCube. Interestingly, from a gamers' perspective, the Wii did end up as GameCube 2.0 when you look at its library. A small bunch of great must-have 1st party Nintendo games with little else of interest. Only difference is that the Wii library has about 10,000 "casual" shovelware/dance games, which the GameCube has not. If the Wii U hardware proves too far removed from the PS4/One hardware, there is a great risk the Wii U will end up in exactly the same spot.

I'm not too surprised the Wii U isn't selling like hotcakes. I mean it's currently up against much cheaper last gen systems with huge libraries of cheap games.

Sadly, I think that's the first time someone's brought that up. That's what I expect to be the case, since that's how the Wii got a large boost from its lower price point.

Very good point, I never thought of that.  Maybe the Wii U will start selling slightly better when the PS4/One launch.

this is sounding a lot like the dreamcast era

The difference being that the first 3 months saw the Wii U outsell both the 360 and PS3s first few months, then it died. Now that news is out of the competition people are buying Wii U's again. Also Sega didn't have a successful handheld to fall back on like Nintendo's always had since 1989.

good point, so maybe it won't be that bad. i just worry that the wii-u feels too much like a transition console between generations to a lot of people.
