The 3DS is selling well. It would be an incredibly stupid business move to stop making handhelds.
You're right. I guess I should've emphasized the "maybe" in my statement. As long as their handhelds are selling fine, great. But it might still happen that people just won't buy a seperate handheld anymore and want their smartphone to do everything. If that happens, Nintendo should get out of the handheld hardware business.
They should already be out of the console hardware business, imo. The Wii U isn't selling that well and many gamers are sensible enough to realize that they should wait for PS4/720 because the vast majority of titles will be on those two systems.
Nintendo hit the jackpot with the Wii because they attracted the non-gamers to buy into the hype. Hypes only last so long though and all those same non-gamers are now not buying the Wii U. If that hadn't happened, the Wii would've been another GameCube. Interestingly, from a gamers' perspective, the Wii
did end up as GameCube 2.0 when you look at its library. A small bunch of great must-have 1st party Nintendo games with little else of interest. Only difference is that the Wii library has about 10,000 "casual" shovelware/dance games, which the GameCube has not. If the Wii U hardware proves too far removed from the PS4/One hardware, there is a great risk the Wii U will end up in exactly the same spot.
