TMNT II, Punch Out, Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 3, Gradius, Dr Mario, Double Dragon, Contra, Tecmo Bowl, Golf
...yes, I think it should be played co-op. You can play the others on the console by yourself. May not be a top 10, but it's what I could think of that would work co-op.

I went the same route.  I put games in my list that are great side by side games and not necessarily my "top 10" 9with the exception of Metroid cause I love it and Punch out because it keeps high scores for KO/TKO times).  I'm sure I'll end up with a few extra games to swap in and out, though.

Excitebike is fantastic on PlayChoice. Not sure about Kung Fu, Super C, or RC Pro - haven't seen the PC versions of those.
