HOW to collect (part 2)

so as you guys know I've been really obsessed with Dreamcast lately. And inadvertantly that's gotten me somewhat more interested in Saturn as well as I've been reading/researching so much Sega stuff. So I guess I'm just curious -- do you think it's better to focus on building a single library at one time, or spread out a bit more?

IE: If I collected for both DC and Sat at the same time, I might find interesting things on each console. But if I focus on just one, then I'd be able to build up that one library quicker by not spending money on other stuff.

yeah I think it's harder for you to relate to my collecting qualms since you have so many places to find stuff locally. I have one local retro place, and it's very hit or miss so the bulk of my collecting is done online y'know.

I never said I have a TON of places locally - most of them are overpriced. Have you noticed how little I've posted in the small scores thread lately?

Personally, if I were buying a lot ONLINE, I would focus on one library until it got to a point where I felt that tracking down individual games was getting difficult. At that point, I would start picking up titles for a new system, while keeping an eye out for the items I had left, until they got to a point where they were cheap enough for me to purchase.

yes, that is actually one of my reservations of getting too into Saturn right now. If you look at the list of US Dreamcast games, sure there's a handful that are pricey, but I'd say none of them actually cost much more than picking up a current-gen game on release day. Y'know? The US Sat library seems to have a lot more expensive titles.

I *think* I'm going to go about it with DC as my main collecting focus, but keeping my eyes peeled for good deals (and local grabs) on Saturn stuff when I can. So still "collecting" Saturn, but just not quite as actively as DC.

I have a copy of Albert Odyssey I'd be willing to part with for Saturn to start you off on the RPG front. It's only the disc, since I picked it up a long time ago before I started collecting CIB, but it's in a case with artwork...

Also, yes, Saturn can get QUITE expensive in comparison to DC. JP Saturn, on the other hand, is quite cheap.

Shadow that is really, really nice of you. But unfortunately nothing disrupts my OCD worse than having a loose disc in my collection. In fact, do you want a disc-only NBA 2K for Dreamcast? Haha.

As far as importing goes, I'm taking the stance with this Sega stuff that if a game is available in US, then get the US version. Reserving importing strictly for exclusives in other regions.

i focus on one system online, n64, but locally i'll pick up just about anything as long as it fits my standards for condition and it's a game i or any friend might actually play. i'll only spread out my spending to other systems online if there's something specific i'm looking for that i've had trouble finding locally.

I'm the same way noise - hence, why I was offering it out. I'm fresh out of Saturn duplicates though, unfortunately. I thought I'd bring up the JP Saturn games though, since they tend to go for $1/game in large lots.

If there are specifics you are looking for, post over in the community hunting thread. My local retro store has a lot of DC and Saturn, and the prices are usually pretty decent.

I think you nailed it here though. Seems like your really enjoying the Dreamcast collecting and you still have quite a significant chunk of the library left to dig through. Like Shadow said just stick with the Dreamcast until things slow down, then you can branch out a bit.

probably a good idea Crab. I hit up my local tonight and they had two sports games for like $9 each with broken hinges. :\ But you're right. I love collecting DC and I have PLENTY more stuff to scoop up for a while!
