I recently picked up an NES Satellite and haven't been able to use it because I don't have any monstrously big batteries to put into it.

I was wondering if anyone has used one and if they experienced noticeable lag compared to using controllers wired directly to the system.

I'm not surprised as the Satellite uses infrared light as opposed to RF.

I remember using one as a kid and I don't recall any latency issues. With the signal moving at the speed of light across a few feet, I wouldn't think that it would be noticeable.
