I found Playstation model SCPH - 1001 at the flea market today for $20.  I've heard that they can be used as high end stereo equipment, but I also heard that they can overheat and malfunction.

Anyone have clarification on the numerous models released over its lifespan? Thanks.

Hmmm, I highly doubt they can replace a HiFi. If they were just as good, there wouldn't be a reason people buy those high end expensive machines, right?

They were high quality compared to the average CD-ROM back then. But even the cheapest CD player nowadays has far surpassed the PS1's 15 year old technology.

I've tested a SCPH-1001 and a later SCPH-9001 and can honestly say they both sound really, really terrific. My new 1001 is currently having problems (more about that in a minute) so a direct comparison is not possible at the moment.

But I can say that both models sound better than they probably have any right to sound -- terrific midrange, good bass and slightly rolled-off highs. Don't just take my word for it. My friend, audiophile Art Dudley, writes in the latest Stereophile that he and his wife preferred the sound from his test PS1 to his expensive Sony component CD player. Stereophile's editor, John Atkinson, added that the PS1 didn't test very well but sounded pretty good when he heard it playing as part of an affordable hi-fi system.

Sounds like it could be true. There are many other articles out there on the net about this subject.

Ahhh...well then next time you plan on getting a $200 HiFi system, just get a $10 PS1 on a flea market instead, then
