I've been thinking about this for a while and I've come to a conclusion. I think we need to change the set up of the "related games" section on a game page. Instead of having just one large category for related games, break it down into smaller categories. I think there should be at least a category for: Prequels, Sequels, alternate system releases, and alternate region releases.
It would be some work to move around what's already there, but I think it'd be a great improvement, especially for someone that's looking for info about a game.

Instead of them seeing a list of 15 games that are somehow related to the game they're looking at it, they can easily look at the sequels/prequels to the game, where else it was released, and what other systems it was released on.

In the short form, what you're describing would be a nightmare to code. Releases in other regions are variations. We currently do not have it where the same game on a different console is a variant. Often times there are enough differences between two versions that calling it a variant would be stressing it. Certainly, when the time comes to add things to the submission system its something to consider, but for now we have spent a lot of time coding improvements to the submission system and would like to focus on other, cooler projects.

While this would make things organized, I really don't see our DB being able to be that organized.  Since none of the current related games have this info, all the current related game tables would have to have this information added.  We don't have release years or developers for over half of our games, so I think this would just be more information that a majority of games wouldn't have filled out.    If we get our current entries more complete then we can consider adding more structure, but until that happens I don't think this would be a good idea.

Thanks for the suggestion though.  I'd like to be able to use all the suggestions people make, but unfortunately there's some that for one reason or another won't work out.  Keep em' coming!
