I have a wireless network set up and everything is working fine.

I was wondering if it's possible to connect a device (Other computer/Xbox) straight to my Desktop Computer through ethernet, then use the desktop's wifi connection. I've been trying to sort it out the best way I can, which is by doing it myself and seeing what's there. It's not working, though.

I have my laptop connected to a spare router through ethernet, then the router connected to the desktop, then the desktop connected by wifi to the wireless router, then to the internet. For some reason, if I connect the laptop directly to the desktop, it says the cable is unplugged. I can network fine on the laptop, seeing shared files on the desktop, but I can't connect to the internet on my laptop this way.

I've set the wifi connection to shared but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

If you want to connect the laptop directly to the desktop you will need what's known as a crossover ethernet cable.  Some of the wires in ths cable are not in the same order as in a standard ethernet cable, allowing this crossover cable to perform the same function as a hub/switch. 

There are ways to share the wireless connection on your desktop to another device, but it may require setup on the device itself, which the xbox may not support.

I've decided I can't be arsed for now, and I've just got the 15 metre ethernet cable going from the kitchen to my room. It's messy but it works.

I just wanted to know if I could conveniently not have wires with one WiFi connection in my room.

Edit: Someone on another forum pointed out that it would only work if the host computer was connected directly to the internet, and not through another router.

Dammit. I don't want to spend £40+ on a gaming ethernet wireless adaptor.

Does the 360 use any USB wireless adaptor, or is it only the official one that works? £55 is a rip off if I can use any sub £20 wireless G adaptor.

Never mind, I deleted that post before I saw you had replied. It turns out you can easily reset the Xbox pass code by using the credit card number. I also found out you don't even need the damn pass code.

I emailed the Xbox Support people asking how to find out what it was and I got a reply within five minutes, about a minute after I worked it out. Micro$oft are far too slow with these things.
