It was announced at Gamescom that the Sierra name would be coming back with Geometry Wars 3 and a King's Quest game arriving next year.

Agreed, another King's Quest game should be awesome. Also agreed, Westwood Studios would be a great change of pace if it were to come back to the industry.

He had tweeted something earlier this week or last week that the original company wasn't just a name but a group of people who actually gave a shit and hoped that the new company could live up to the old.

Heavily paraphrased.

Talked about it in the All Gen Gamers podcast #178:

7-ish minutes in.

I wonder too about the value of using a defunct companies name on a new product. It seems likely the name Sierra was acquired along with the rights to games, and the game's names. If you're buying it all as a package deal, why not use the companies name on your new games? On the other hand, making a point of purchasing the name by itself would seem kinda silly.

It could also be like other entertainment mediums where the names are just as important as content. Companies buy Intellectual Properties all the time just for the sake of not having to continue competing with them. I have seen it happen in the Automobile industry and in the Internet industry.

I seem to remember that at one time it seemed like most PC games came with some sort of "Sierra Online" badge on their box, or on the jewel case.  I seem to remember Earthsiege being one of those (as well as the countless scrapbook and cooking software programs that my wife used to get).
