NTSC SNES cart shapes

looking at the shape of the cartridge shell below the label i see there are (at least) two types. compare these two;

and

anyone know why there were two shell types and if they make any difference? maybe one's canadian or something?

The original design locked the cartridge into place when you pressed the Power Button up (hence the slot). Later revisions of the system/cart did away with the locking, though this thread may have more info on the reason why it was actually changed:

I think the scoop carts are just later releases. Everything is identical between both I believe, including the part numbers. I used to have two different shaped Spindizzy Worlds carts. Nobody has bothered to put up separate entries for different SNES shell fronts at the moment. Other than Mario Paint:

seems it's indicative of a second production run then, even if nothing else was redesigned. i wouldn't mind making separate entries for my two or three 'scoop carts', but the SNES cart's been around for so long i think if there was any sort of significant difference between the two other than the lock-on part wed've known about it by now, so maybe it's actually irrelevant to everyone?

It's just something we've never tracked until recently. Atari carts also had many different designs for the same cart.
It's up to the community to decide how we track them. They could just be Extra Media scans, or full blown Game Pages.

'extra media' sounds good to me, that way we have the information and the pic in the db in the event that they become relevant in the future.
and for the record - i noticed this just i was uploading a replacement scan to the Super Mario Kart entry at U-044-S-05740-A, original wasn't sloped.
