Overview

The Power Plug is a third-party accessory by Tyco designed for the Sega Genesis. It was only released in North America in 1993.

The Power Plug supposedly has the power to turn any standard Genesis controller into the "ultimate weapon", by adding various types of turbo features. A controller is plugged into the Power Plug, which is then plugged into the console.

The device assists in controlling the Sega Genesis, mainly through storing macros (button presses, and their order, for example, quarter circle forward, then C, for a Fire Ball in street fighter II).

"Thrash" provides built in presets for a few common games (for example, the special moves for Ryu in Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition and "Pro" allows the user to program the device to perform custom moves (for example, a fatality move for Mortal Kombat, or a cheat code that has to be executed quickly (like the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 level select) can be programmed slowly, one button at a time.

The device will record each button press, program a trigger for it (any button or button combo), and then play back the control macro at fast speed. This allows players to perform sequences of control inputs that would be difficult or impossible to perform without the device and perform them perfectly every time the trigger button or buttons were pressed.

A similar "Power Plug" accessory for the Super Nintendo was also released by Tyco.
