Forward

As stated in the staff policies, editors act as the leader of a section of the site, being the motivating force behind the growth of the site. Editors motivate, inspire, and lead. They ensure that their section is growing and successful. They also work to solve problems and establish goals for the growth of their section. While that description is what an editor of the site is in a nut shell, because to the previous existence of editors and a general vagueness of those statements, it is prudent to define what exactly an editor is expected to do. These policies add onto the published staff policies.

A Trusted Staff Member

Someone becomes an editor because they are a trusted member of our staff and because there is an opening for an editor. Someone who wishes to become an editor must have the drive to live the policies transcribed on this site when working on or for RF Generation, in addition to being an active member of our community.

A Caretaker

RF Generation is a massive database, one that often overwhelms those who take care of it. As an editor, one would be expected to assist with being a caretaker of whatever it is that they are assigned to care for. Maintenance of their area using the provided staff scripts and use of SQL is an expectation of editors. Without proper maintenance, RF Generation would look like an overgrown lawn. It’s critically important that editors, and directors, take care of the site.

A Leader

Editors inspire, motivate, and lead. Being a leader requires walking a fine line. Being too fervent towards a goal may make people weary towards one. At the same time, not doing anything may make one look weak. Editors should be able to use the tools at hand and more their part of the site forward. The ways that this could be accomplished are many:
  • Database Goals
  • Open enrollment, team-based projects
  • Database promotion
  • Something we haven’t thought of yet

Certainly, the methods that an editor uses to keep their part of the site going can vary wisely. While we give editors a wide range of tools and freedoms to get things done, we ask that editors consider their actions before executing them. As a respected member of RF Generation, what an editor does will reflect upon the entire site. As a general guidance, act with professionalism and class when representing the site.

An editor must be able to identify problems. If problems arise in an area, what solutions can be implemented? Think for the best solution, and remember that the best solution is sometimes the simplest solution. No one wants to spend the time overdoing something when the return is minuscule.

Communication is extremely important for editors. Someone who can’t communicate problems or concerns to others will have extreme trouble getting those issues resolved. Poor communication may lead people to think that nothing is moving forward with one’s section of the website. For these reasons, the ability to communicate is very important.

What an Editor is Not

In the current site setup, an editor does not have any control over other staff numbers. While RF Generation desires our staff members to work as a team, we are not to make any staff member report to anyone but the directorship. We value the independent spirit of many staff members, and we want them to do what they do best within the confines of the site guidelines and policies. Similarly, we expect the same from editors. Editors are not above the policies, and are held accountable to the same policies and guidelines as their peers. Do not force anyone to work on a project if they explain that they do not wish to.

Editors also can not directly chide other staff members. If an editor notices a staff member doing something improper, they need to bring their concerns to the directorship for possible resolution. If resolution is to be made, it shall be made by the editors. Please note that this does not hold true for regular members. Any notification of policy / guideline deviation by an editor to a regular member is allowed, but we ask that the editor notify the directorship and other editors of the correspondence. In any correspondence with regular members, always maintain the highest level of professionalism.

Editors can start team based projects, and these team based projects can consist of both regular members and staff members. It is asked that editors discuss the project with the directorship before beginning the project.

Editors are not allowed to change policies or guidelines. Any potential changes in policies or guidelines must be discussed with the directorship, and the directorship will decide whether or not to change the guidelines.

Reserved Rights of the Directorship

These policies are in their infancy, and for this reason, expect them to change. The directorship reserves the right to change these policies or deviate from these policies if the need arises.
