Not that I'm looking to cause trouble (¬¬) but could someone give me a link to the IGN tracking stuff? I can pretty much guarantee I won't use it because for some reason IGN is hideously, ridiculously slow to load (which is also why I don't want to go looking for it myself) but I'd still like to check it out a bit.

If you have dial up IGN will kill you. If IGN is missing a game good luck getting it added to the list. I tried for a year to get 6 Genesis games added with no luck. That was 3 years ago.

Hey welcome to the site Smiley

I thought this was just my thread i posted a couple years ago dug back up lol.

I used Collectorz for awhile but then i aupdated and lost my free version :-/
Wasn't a bad prog though. But we are IMO miles ahead of it seeing as we are free and can just as easily cater to damn near all your needs. Smiley

As for us being more console based it is just easier lol.
There are alot of PC games out there comparativcely. I know i have about 100 back in Mass. and none of them nor the few hundred other PC games i was encountering were entered into the database.(Which i took it upon myself to do Smiley)

Again welcome and thanks in advance for updating the PC part of the database.
Hope you stick around Smiley

Try and get some pictures up too i am interested to see how you stored PC games. I know it was a pain in the ass for me. With them all being differetn shapes and sizes. grrrr...

From the sounds of it, your old post about losing your "free" version of Collectorz was what led me here. I tried their demo, with the 50-game limit, and loved it, but I ain't paying no 40 bucks for it. So I guess your post came in handy even if it didn't really answer my question. Smiley

And yes, I know all about IGN on dialup. Everytime I hit a news or article link there, I fire up a game of Freecell and cry while I wait for it. The more I think about it, the more I think, it ain't worth it. Especially given the system here (which is looking pretty solid), plus the idea of setting up a spreadsheet. I think my original question has been answered.

I'll toss up some pics when I get a chance. I took some shots of my stuff a few years ago, but the collection has grown considerably since then. It's not one of these freaky-huge collections you run into every now and then online, but I am facing a bit of a "room crisis."

I noticed pretty quickly that this site is very console-centric, but that's fairly common among game collectors. I suppose that level of dedication is more common among console gamers because consoles cater strictly to gamers, whereas the PC market tends to be more diverse. I also get the impression that a lot of PC gamers eventually grow away from gaming on the PC, usually as they become more casual in their gaming habits, and migrate to one console or another.

Since the database submission rules don't seem to be too overly demanding, I'll take your advice and just get the basic game information for now: the minimum information I'd want for my own collection. We'll see how it goes from there. How long does it typically take a database addition to be approved?

*edit: Oh. Not very long at all, I see.

Trust me, I want the site to be much more comprehensive in our games database. We are first and foremost a games and hardware database, but the collectors on the site have been so vocal that adding certain games has become a no no, as things like downloadable content  and the like would hurt their console collection.

That having been said, I'll be adding something in the next submission system to make it so that all released games get added, not just those hard copy games. The future of gaming is leaning more and more towards digital distribution, and to keep up with the times we must adapt the database to make ourselves ready for this time. Of course, we will make it so that the collection numbers are still meaningful, but we will certainly be making it so that we really can be "The Classic and Modern Video Games Database", as our slogan implies.

Dial-up is the reason I hate humanity.

That said, I'd still sugest using an online site (this one's cool to!) in adition to online spread sheets.  Myself, back when I was still using dial-up I did my entire collection using it on IGN.  It took over 2 weeks just to do over 300 games, but it got done.  On a side note, I also got a good laugh at their collection value.  If I could sell my collection then for half they valued it at, I'd have done it in a flash.  I wonder what they'd say of it now that it's nearly 4x what it was then?  Excell will help some as it can go into greater detail for stuff like personal ratings of the quality of stuff in adition to more personal notes on each and and such.

yea, the unfortunate thing is you can't get a value next to each game, only in total so you can't tell which games are putting the valuation out of whack.
I still use IGN, mostly because thats where most of my collection is

I just went there and signed up ( IGN ) and entered FFVII and it estimated the value at 14.99.    UMMMMMMMMMMMMM OOOOOOOOOKKKKKK.

AND IT TOOK FOREVER AND KEPT CRASHING. and I have a high speed. What a joke.

RF GEN is so much better.

RF Gen is the best I've found so far. I was also using the Collectorz/game version, it wasn't as good and it was too much work. RF Gen is always the easier way, as I can check my collection when I go to flea markets and what not.

You think thats bad enter the title of a game worth a couple hundred bucks.

The only games they have a decent value system on are the ones that were just released.
And then they slowly decrease the value of said games overtime.

When i still was using them just for laughs i added some games like Star Fox Weekend and DK Competition and my collection value went up i think 10-20$s for each game
lol

GameCrazy had one for a while, but lots of the titles were wrong and adding took a while.  I gave up on it and used Excel spreadsheets until I stumbled upon this wonderful place.  Most of the collection lists here are rock solid, and for the ones that aren't... there are always additions.

I used the gamecrazy one while they had it too
lol

I also used the DP one while they had it.(It was taken down correct???)

I think i have(or i should say had) bits and pieces of my collection up on 5-10 websites... not to mention all the offline tracking methods i used.

The only one i ever bothered keeping up with and staying with was this site.

same here, its RFgeneration and Excel for me.  In addition, I'm building a binder to take my lists with me so I know what I need/have.  This will be especially important when I really crack down on NES variants.  I'm using precut (ex rental) game boxes for folder dividers too.  Its starting to look pretty sharp.  Now all I need is for them to cut off last gen support so I can finally make a solid list for GameCube, PS2 and Xbox.
