It is for NES. It's the only RPG/vertical scrolling shooter that I can think of. If you still can't figure it out I'll give you a better clue later.

It's the only one I could think of that had guardian in it.  I vaguely remember this game.  Is it my turn yet ?  Nester signed off so I don't know if I'm right.
