I am thinking of signing up for Steam but didn't want to buy a game to tryout. Just wandering about any free games. And also good Steam game suggestions are also welcome.

Team Fortress 2
Planetside 2
Star Conflict

There's an entire section of the store dedicated to Free-to-play games. These are riddled with micro transactions though.

Team Fortress 2 is probably the best free-to-play game to try out, considering that, unlike other F2P games on there, the stock loadout for all classes is balanced well enough, you earn unlockable (and often times gimmicky) weapons randomly just from playing the game, and most of the stuff you could buy for the game are cosmetics that don't do much (hats hats hats). It's a rather old school style FPS, though. If you love Counter-Strike or Call of Duty but hate Quake 3 or Unreal Tournament, you might not like Team Fortress 2.

Also it has rocket jumping. All the best FPS games have rocket jumping, that's a fact.

There is also demo and free to play weekends.  Plus if you tell me your steam name I will send you Portal for free because I am just a nice guy. Wink

if you have portal 2 on ps3 already you get a free copy on PC. maybe there are some people here with the ps3 version that don't need/want the PC code.

Alien Swarm - top down squad based shooter, free if you have source based game ( I've got a spare HL2 from the orange box if you want it)
Gotham City Impostors - cool over the top FPS, has lots of DLC but not needed as loot drops are pretty frequent.

There are tons of great games on Steam.  It all depends on your personal taste, or course, but here is a list of good games that you probably have not played/heard of.

Also, be on the lookout for Steam sales when games can be 50-90% off and sign up for notifications on humblebundle.com to get game bundles for next to nothing while giving money to charity.

Hard Reset-cyberpunk FPS, very cool if you like Blade Runner type dystopian settings.
Bit trip Runner-very simple reflex game with retro graphics, typically on sale for cheap.
Breath of Death VII-Only a buck or two. 16 bit RPG with very funny writing
Osmos-couple of bucks, decent indie game that is very relaxing but not boring.
Sword and Sworcery.  Retro style adventure game that is beautiful and immersive.

Gotham City is free now?
Must have done that after they dropped GFWL support.

I tried out Team Fortress 2 today and it was ok, but after thinking about it for awhile. I have more then enough games on consoles to play without starting a Steam account. But thanks for all the suggestions guys!

It's still worth having one for the sales. You can get indie games and what not for insanely low prices.

^ what he said, if you're a pc gamer and don't have a problem with digital games it's almost a must have. they have great sales all the time, and some games that are exclusive to steam.

Thing is, I've never really been a PC gamer. And plenty of games that comes out on the indie scene on PC makes it to consoles or handhelds anyways. And while Steam does have exclusive games, I just see myself buying them and then never playing them at all. The only real series from Valve that I enjoyed was Left 4 Dead/Portal. Both of which I already have on 360.

if you're not into PC then that's more understandable, i just mean if you already play a lot of pc then it's a good thing to have.
