Title: Genre switching
Post by: Tynstar on December 22, 2004, 07:32:54 AM
OK this thread (http://www.rfgeneration.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=classic;action=display;num=1103728592) got me thinking. Can anyone think of a series of games that has switched genre for even one game and the game out of the normal genre been good?

Example Mortal Kombat is a good fighting series. Then they make Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero an Action/Adventure game and it sucked badly. I can't think of anymore examples but I am sure they are some.

Also I am not talking about a series going from 2d to 3d but that argument good be made as well.

Morrtal Kombat is notorious genre breaker.
Mortal Kombat Deception is so far their biggest mish mosh of genres.
MK Mythos and MK Special forces were suposed to expound on the story line in a new way.

I can't think of very many games series that cross genres but i can think of alot of characters that do.
Usually when there is a change in genre it is not part of the series but ment to add to background of the real series or just to make some money off of a title or character.

Super Mario Bros. transfered pretty well to RPG's for Super Mario RPG and both Paper Marios.

On top of that you have all of the random games that feature Mario that aren't platformers at all like Mario Kart, Mario Golf, and Super Smash Bros. Melee.

But at its core is MK: Deception not a fighter?

I know why companies make games that go out of genre. Like you said story and money (mostly money) but are any of them any good?

True Mario is all over the play. What bad Mario games have there been?

It is more characters bouncing from genre to genre than a whole game or series.

MK: Deception is a fighter at heart even in the other Genre elements they mixed in the still worked fighting into it.

Would you say Legend of Zelda series worked its way into a fighter because of SC2 or SSBM?
Mario is a genre whore so lets not even get into Mario games.

Link was in Mario RPG as an FYI. You ran into him in a inn.

Panzer Dragoon changed from a shooter to an RPG and back to a shooter.

And what can be said about Mario, can also be said about sonic. Although he didn't have as many games as mario, he did have a pinball game.

There's also the street fighter puzzle game Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo and pretty much any game series that got a game for freaky consoles, like ecco and tails on the sega pico.

There are a few, here's some of the top of my head:

Toe Jam & Earl -> Toe Jam & Earl 2 (isometric adventure to 2d platformer)
Sonic series (platformers, racing games, fighting games, 3d adventures etc.)
Stryker's Run -> Codename Droid (Side scrolling shooter to full roaming platform adventure, and it's on the BBC sorry :P)
Starfox/Starwing/Lylat Wars -> Starfox Adventures (3d flying to 3d platformer, and I've only HEARD the latter is good, never played it)

Don't forget Sonic Shuffle and all ninety Mario Party games.  I never got into them much, but a lot of people did like them.

Going back to cart racers, there are about a billion of those, many of which came out of other proven franchises.  Crash Bandicoot is one that hasn't been mentioned.  I haven't played it, but it does exist (and I own it).

The Kirby series has also made games out of genre.  First, there was Kirby's Adventure and the Kirby's Dreamland games, and then there was also Kirby's Pinball Land and Kirby's Air Ride.  The pinball title was great.  I've played Air Ride, but not enough to give a solid opinion on it.

Then there's Pokemon.  I don't think I even need to go into this.

Ahh yes, Kirby.  There was Star Stacker, Avalanche (puzzle) and Dream Course (golf thing) too.

Kirby Allstars was a few genres all by itself.

Bomberman has at least 2 genres under his belt.

Crash Bandicoot - platformer to racing
House of the Dead - shooter to pinball, typing
Mega Man - platformer to soccer *shudders*

I'm sure there's tons more, I just can't think atm.

Don't forget frogger going all over the map with quest type games and platformers.

I think most are forgetting one of the most obvious. Metroid

Don't you mean Pac-Land (Lynx, Pc-Engine)and that SNES game Pac-Man: the New Adventures or something like that). Pac-Mania is more Pac-Man in a isomatric playfield and the ability to jump. Pac-Mania is also on Megadrive btw.

But then there's Pac-Man Fever which is a Mario Party-esque game.

Right, you can only jump with pacmania. I haven't played it for ages, so my brain is a bit rusty. Pac man also got a game on the playstation that was mostly platform.

It was kinda like Crash Bandicoot.
