Title: Are you a smoker?
Post by: Izret101 on March 16, 2009, 10:08:21 AM
just curious to see how many other people have/had this terrible habit.

I tend to stick with Marb Lights. Though i have tried dozens of other brands. Started with Cigars/cigarillos and Marb Red 100s.

Have tried most of the national/international brands though.

I quit smoking about 6 years ago when I met my wife. I always told myself that I would quit when I found the right woman. I still have one on occasion when I go out with the guys though. I really enjoyed Marb 27's.

Marb Blend 27s arn't bad. Pretty sure they fall between light and mediums.
Marb Virginia Blend on the other hand are not so great they fall between ultra lights and lights.

I don't smoke, I've never seen the appeal of it and it's way too expensive for me.

Used to smoke Cigars and whatever cigs I could find (I find a surprisingly large amount of cigarettes) but I quit because I got tired of tasting like an ashtray all the time.

Also the cost/ health thing I guess.

Not saying you should all be on like five packs a day or anything. But I'll be damned if I won't try something at least once.

Cigs and alcohol just pair up so well together don't they?

No i am not. I don't want anyone to self incriminate. And actually i would be missing many options if that were the case :-P

To expand on that a little more, if I were given the opportunity to base jump off a skyscraper with a parachute, yes I would probably do it. But as the witty little remark that it was, no, I will not try something that will certainly kill me, not even once.

Then why would try smoking, even once?

Sure, that one cigaretty won't kill you. But they all count and they are all harmful. Plus, you run the risk of getting addicted and then that one cigarette can suddenly make a lot of difference.

Addicted from one cig? Holy crap keep the cough medicine and Pepsi away from this one. ::)

I used to smoke many years ago, a fun accessory to alcohol while in the army. Back then it was mostly du Maurier Regular, Export A Green (Green Death) or Players Navy Cut unfiltered. I was also an accomplished roller ;) so I was no stranger to handrolling one whenever I felt like it. I still enjoy a cigar from time to time, it just feels right with whiskey or scotch. Also Cuban cigars aren't illegal here so one doesn't have to settle for anything less than the best.

Actually if someone only smoked a couple cigs a month or even just a pack a year it would increase their lungs health.
It damages the lungs slightly and then forces them to heal themselves which can help fight off various infections.

I am actually surprised cig companies haven't tried to use this as a marketing idea.

Where have you heard this?
Your lungs are not like your hands where calluses build up to protect against damage.

Title: Re: Are you a smoker?
Post by: Izret101 on March 18, 2009, 07:46:56 PM
The way it was explained to me is that the smoke causes the lung to be damaged which then kicks it into overdrive to repair itself.
Constant exposure by being a regular smoker won't give the lungs time to repair to their previous state. But smoking very infrequently will put your lungs into the repair overdrive more often.

As far as the callus comparison a callus is not the skin healing from damage it is the skin thickening because it has reached the point just before damage.

I guess a somewhat better comparison ts more like injecting a dead virus to work the bodies antibody defenses up.

Hmmmmm I like that Euro box art better than the US one.
Also that clip was awesome.

I have tried quitting a few times but somehow i keep getting jobs were everyone smokes or most people smoke so i find myself being given cigs even when i am trying to quit. Because they think i couldn't afford them for one reason or another.

For shame.

You were already past the hardest part of quitting.
I don't think i have been able to make it more than a week or 2 when i quit.

I'm cutting back because almost 20$s every couple days is 2x what i was spending in Texas.

Did one drag of my mom's Kools, and that pretty much did it for me as a smoker.

Well, there was that dalliance with a certain other smokable substance...

Now if there's one reason to quit, it's the expense.

If you're lucky, you might be able to find the fly-by-night stuff for $3.50 a pack around my neck of the woods. But the usual going rate is about $5 a pack.

If ya really wanna kill yourself slowly, do it the cheap way: with sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and empty-calorie carbohydrates.

Marbs are 8 bucks a pack here. I quit cold turkey for about 6 months.(When i was working)
Started again when i got laid off and was stressed out.(My pay just got cut by 75%. I am stressed... I'll co spend ~8$s on a pack of smokes.)
I have been weaning myself off again (because i no longer have a source of income) hopefully i can kick them for good.

Wow, it got really tense in here for a moment.  Me, quit around 1997, not because of the price (about $2.50 a pack) but due to some strange pains in my chest.  My poison of choice?  Camel Turkish Blend.  Mmmm.

The funny thing is that I didn't smoke all that long (on and off from 1994 to 1997, with the last six months literally smoking my paycheck away at five packs a day), but I still think about them.  Hate the smell of them lit, but love the smell of a freshly opened pack.  This is partly the reason I never pay for gas inside but rather at the pump.  Something to think about for all you non-smokers.

Haven't smoked anything but the occasional Cuban I can get my hands on for about a year. Roommates smoke sheisha out of a hookah fairly religiously, but it really fucks me up so I don't do it. Fuckin' nicotine rips me up.

I quit smoking but have nothing against smokers. Sometimes I feel like a smoke but never end up buying any because the smallest pack you can buy (where I live) is a pack of 20. I wish places would sell singles so I could just have a single smoke once every now and then.

I thought they had 10 packs in Japan? (Assuming you are actually in Japan)

Italy has 10 packs. The only places i have heard of where you can still buy singles were India and from random person on the street.

It's true, I have seen them before but they are aimed at women with their sissy packaging and are almost always menthols. But 10 is still far too many when all I want is one.

I have heard of bars that have free smokes but I am yet to actually find one. And yes, I do really live in Japan.

Yeah, like sirpsycho said, there are all-you-can-drink places, but there is always a time limit. $25 (US$) for an hour and a half is probably the most common deal. While most Japanese see this as a convenient and hassle free way to have a few drinks, most foreigners see it  more like a challenge.

Another thing is that you have to order the drinks and the waitress brings them to you. If it they think you are drinking too much and they will not make a profit (or you are getting too drunk and rowdy), they stagger the orders so the drinks take longer. That said and all things considered it's still a pretty good deal.

Also I live in Osaka
