Title: Creating new main genre Post by: sharp on December 10, 2004, 02:04:20 AM Personal I feel the current genre system is a bit to short. I miss some main genres. For example the catgeory action/adventure i too big, as it reaches from Mario Bros to Myst. I think this better can be ttwo ccategories. Other new categories I woould like to see are Gamble/Casino as it's a complete diffrent kind of game then other game simulators. Also for the rest directory I would like to see that music and rhythem games and compilations get their own genre. This as this games have a clear own name to put them into.
Don't know how other peeople think about my comments. So please tell me. Title: Re: Creating new main genre Post by: Arrrhalomynn on December 10, 2004, 02:46:16 AM I think the problem would be that you have to look at 12000 games again and redecide in what genre they belong. I think the way the genres are handled now is fine, if only the sub genres would used.

But as for the Music and Gambling that is just the matter of finding a much smaller group of specific games. Title: Re: Creating new main genre Post by: sharp on December 10, 2004, 03:51:27 AM Yes it's alot of work, but the action adventure is just a too big group, and maybe it's an idea to make some clear rules for the sub-genrres, with forced categories, so you can also search under the subgenre.
Title: Re: Creating new main genre Post by: Lord Nepenthean on December 10, 2004, 08:38:50 AM I agree that Action/Adventure is too broad but there are two things stopping me from separating them. The main one is that there are about 3100 games in the database that have this classification. That would take close to a million years to re-assign them with the current editing system we have. The other problem is that some of these games have a very fuzzy line of where they fall. Sure, Mario Bros. is definitely action and Myst is definitely Adventure, but where do you put a game like Super Mario Bros.? What about Super Mario 64? A lot of sites would call these Action-Adventure games. If we separate Action and Adventure, I'd be fine with having this as a sub-genre, but is it a sub-genre of Action or of Adventure?
I'll talk to Eddie and see if he has any ideas about how to go about doing this. |
