The game's looking good. But how many of us play fighting games? Hmmm...new poll coming. ;D

I'm glad it's finally returning to it's roots.

But how many of us play fighting games?

There's still a lot of fighting game tournaments and leagues so more than you think. It's one of my favorite genres, actually.

I'm really not sure about this one. It seems like they're trying so hard to get away from SF3, and SF3 is my favorite fighting game :(

I plan on buying this game when it's released.

I agree with Wolfman.

Maybe RFG's members are somewhat of a niche category of gamers. Besides the obvious love for older games we're maybe more aimed towards RPG and such. (I could be wrong though :P)

But when looking at gamers in general I think many of them will like fighting games.

I think the evolution of multiplayer has a lot to do with it. Few fighting games have excellent or lag free multi, and fewer gamers actually get together in one room to play as opposed to online.

I used to play a lot of arcade fighting games but as arcades slowly died off those opportunities to play dried up rather fast.

Samurai Shodown II
Street Fighter II CE
Mortal Kombat II
Soul Calibur 1 & 2
Dead or Alive 2 & 3
Marvel/Capcom games

I see Virtua Fighter 5 for $18, I may pick it up as well.

As far as SFIV, I'm cautiously optimistic. Capcom hasn't done any top notch work in the genre for many years now, and reputation alone isn't going to make this a great game. So while I'm optimistic, a part of me wonders if they are even capable.

Read a review in my local magazine and they weren't too positive either.

It's not a bad game at all, but it doesn't really add much new to the genre or to the SC-series itself. They found it a must-have for the fans but not for the average gamer.

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix: Awesome trailer with surprisingly cool music!

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/42790.html

But seriously, the name is getting rediculous. I know it's still based of the original Street Fighter II but damn....they might as well call it HD Turbo Street II Remix Super Fighter. It'd make just as much sense. :P

How so? It's the HD Remix of Super Street Fighter II Turbo. Sounds simple to me.

As far as Street Fighter IV is concerned, I think I'll wait until Super Street Fighter IV Turbo HD Remix comes out.

Why waste money on *just* Street Fighter IV? ;D

I just hope you have an arcade stick or a controller with a d-pad that isn't crap. I can't imagine playing SF on the 360's d-pad. Uggggghh.

You could always just use the analog stick.

I didn't think of that at the time because I'm a stupid doo-doo head. Sorry. :(

Actually I take that back. I got SFIV yesterday and the analog stick sucks with it. I needs to invest in an arcade stick.

I'll recommend this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Xbox360-Fighting-Stick-EX-Xbox-360/dp/B000V02P6Q/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1234979541&sr=8-1

I have the PS3 version of this stick (the FS3), and I love it. For the price, it's easily the best value arcade stick you can get.

I just picked SF4 up at lunch. But if you've got to buy a special stick to get it to play well, I might just return it unopened to get my money back. :P

Help me understand why not...because I've just gone from looking forward to this game to dreading it solely because of the standard controller's poor performance.

I wouldn't want to play any game with clunky controls, and I certainly wouldn't want to have to shell out another $60 for a controller that "fixes" the issue.

Help me out here.

Title: Re: Street Fighter IV and Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
Post by: Sirgin on February 18, 2009, 04:46:44 PM
I think the need for an arcade stick to enjoy this game is a bit overrated.

Sure, if you want to be a "pro" beat-em-up player a stick will help you throw out those combos with improved accuracy, but that doesn't mean a regular controller won't do the job.

Secondly, arcade sticks are also perceived as "better" because many beat-em-up fans have a history in the arcades. To recreate that (nostalgic) experience a good arcade stick will help out tremendously.

So I doubt SF4 has "clunky controls". People who like arcade sticks will always prefer them over standard controllers, regardless how good/bad those are for a certain game. :)

^That all makes perfect sense, Sirgin.

I guess I just can't imagine being able to use an arcade stick without it being a fixture in a cabinet or suction cupped to a table (which could work for my living room), it seems like the weight of the thing would keep you from moving the stick the way you wanted to ("THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!"...sorry, had to be done ;D) ...but I suppose that's a personal preference thing.

Okay, you've convinced me. I'll give it a try.

There's actually more to the technical side of things. In a game like that, input speed and controller lag are factors as well. A wired arcade stick is faster than a wireless game pad most of the time. So are repeated button presses with your whole hand in action instead of a thumb.

For most people I'm sure it's not a factor. But if you want to get competitive, it's no different than a weighted laser mouse or a keyboard with presets.

I'm sure that if you're a casual fighting game player the 360 controller will work just fine for you. If you like the game and want to get more into it and other fighters, then I'd recommend investing in the stick.

No doubt. I can't get past how to do Chun-Li's supers. that whole forward-back-forward-back thing is getting me so aggravated.

I'm using C.Viper.

And I'll throw this out there, any tips for defending? I tried playing Arcade mode on "Easiest" and got my ass kicked in the 5th fight 13x by Vega! I was ready to throw my controller on several occasions so I decided to call it a night. The AI seems ridiculously tough. Another m-f'er is Zangief!

The game is beautiful and gameplay is solid, but I'm getting quickly frustrated with the AI.

Any tips for a beginner to the SF franchise to try out before I decide to trade this in?

The best tip I can give you is to pick a character you're comfortable with and PRACTICE. The great thing about this game is that most special are done using fireball motion, so they're relatively easy to pull off. Invent some combos, make sure that you're defending and getting the most out of the Focus Attacks, they're a great defensive tool. COMBOS, COMBOS, COMBOS, that's what gets you wins.

As far as newbies go, I like Abel. He's really accessible and there's a lot of strategy at play when you use him. Of course I will always love playing as Sakura though.

^Thanks.

I'm going to have to work the Focus attacks into my game some more. When I first loaded the game up, I went straight to the training mode so I could learn her moves. I like her attack set. At first I thought the Focus attacks were slow, but I "accidentally" pulled one or two off in some of my matches (button-mashing...bad, I know...but I am a raw Beginner) and they proved to be effective. Good to know they're a solid defensive tactic.

@phoenix: I'm glad I was able to convince you to try out the game. :)

It would've been a shame if you didn't play that game just for a stupid arcade stick, especially since you already bought it.

The best tip I can give you: PRACTICE! Fighting games take a long time to master. Be sure to play other people online, since that's a good way to get better. Even though you may get your ass handed to you, you'll pick up ideas from their play style.

Title: Re: Street Fighter IV and Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
Post by: phoenix1967 on February 19, 2009, 01:40:36 PM
If I get to the point where I can beat the AI on Medium (at least), then maybe I'll be ready to try competing online against the world. I'm encouraged to hear that Capcom is planning to release a free DLC to improve matchmaking so that comparable skill level players are matched up more regularly.

For now, I'll stick to just my friend's list if someone wants to play online. 8)

The best tip I can give you: PRACTICE! Fighting games take a long time to master.

While I agree with that, it still seemed that the AI is ridiculously tough...even at the "Easiest" difficulty, especially when compared to other fighting games set at the Normal/default. Granted, it obvously has something to do with me being a raw newb, but it was still more frustrating than encouraging to be getting my ass handed to me repeatedly on "Easiest".

Just be careful though, you can only absorb one attack when you do Focus. Any additional hits will hit you.
