Title: Mirror's Edge
Post by: Sirgin on October 26, 2008, 05:49:20 PM
This game will be released in about two weeks. I think the style of this game is completely awesome and I think it has a lot of potential. My only concern is whether or not the parcours-gameplay is actually fun to play. Has anybody played a demo of this game?

Watch this trailer to see how the gameplay looks like:

Interesting, but looks like it may be a little awkward to play in parts.

I've been looking forward to this one for a long time now. Unforunately, I can't get it on release day because I don't have the money to do so at this point in time, but it might go on my christmas list, depending on if I like the demo or not.

I have been following this since I first heard about it but I need to try a demo and hear some reviews before I plunk down any money on it.

Looks freaking amazing.
Yeah, it does. I love the cleanness of the visual style. :)

Parkour on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkour).

Quote from: Parkour Wiki
According to David Belle, "the physical aspect of parkour is getting over all the obstacles in your path as you would in an emergency. You want to move in such a way, with any movement, as to help you gain the most ground on someone or something, whether escaping from it or chasing toward it." Thus, when faced with a hostile confrontation with a person, one will be able to speak, fight, or flee. As martial arts are a form of training for the fight, parkour is a form of training for the flight.
A good explination of what Parkour is. It's also not to be confused with Free Running, which is more acrobatics-focussed.

With everything else coming out this holiday season, I can afford to wait until this one becomes a bargain ($29.99 or less) title.

I'll still try the demo, but it's not high on my list.

Apparently the demo is out on XBL and PS Store today. SOMEBODY PLAY IT AND LET US KNOW HOW IT IS.

Yeah, I'm curious myself. I really do hope it's fun because otherwise I'd just be a very good looking game that doesn't play too well. :-\

I played through the demo last night. It's EXTREMELY short (I completed the full thing on my first time in 15 minutes), but oh wow, it is incredible. I must have played through the main part of the demo 4 times last night just trying to cut my time down.

The controls are far different than your standard first person game, but they work just beautifully. On the PS3 edition, L1 is upward motion (like jumping or climbing up), L2 does downward motion (crouching, sliding, rolling after a high jump, etc), R1 does a quick turn, and R2 is your punch button. The face buttons do things like disarming enemies and activiating reaction time. There are so many cool moves you can do in this game, my favorite being doing a wall jump, a quick turn, and another wall jump. But the best part of the game is that you can play it totally non-violently, and it feels far more satisfying to do so that way.

With the demo being so short, I can't tell how the replay value will be outside of trying to beat your friends on the online leaderboards, but that could easily become quite addictive.

So yeah, Mirror's Edge, damned awesome...but I can't get it right away since I'm poor. I'm putting it on my Christmas list.

Thanks for checking out the game for us, Tondog! :)

And by the sound of it, we have a winner on our hands, too :D As long as the game won't be too short and/or have other unsuspected flaws I think this'll be a big hit.

It would be cool if you could create your own levels, share with others, etc... it would definitely improve the lifespan of the game as well.

Some more gameplay footage:

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/42224.html

Although I love the game's running aspect I'm not sure about the combat gameplay. Maybe it's just this trailer but it's looking a bit awkward. The animations look a bit stiff too. I hope this doesn't affect the overal gameplay too much.

It does remind me a bit of Half-Life though, which is a good thing. :)

While it continues to look amazing, I must admit it looks a lot like a 3rd person platformer (Tomb Raider) just in first person. Not sure what to think in the end.

It looks like it'd be a short game...but a good bargain title.

Agreed, but there was something in the back of my mind that kept me saying meh, and this just reaffirms it. I really wish there was a PC demo.

That's sad. :(

What is wrong with the game (according to those reviewers)? Is the lenght the issue here, or are there serious flaws in the gameplay?

I like what I have seen. A review on Good Game

If it were on Mac I would probably pick it up.

I'm really excited about this game, I just wish my pre-order would hurry up.

I wasn't expecting it to get great reviews but I want to support EA(does that sound weird to anyone else?) so that they can flush out the gameplay more and hopefully get an even bigger sequel.

Fuck the reviewers.

My cuz bought LBP and traded it in for this. I had only seen commercials for it but i looked interesting for sure.
Depending on length i don't think this sounds or looks like a bad titles at all.

I just finished this today and I loved the running parts of it but I hate the combat in this game. I probably died 10 times per level from falling but 20 from the combat.

I really hope that they make the sequels that they have planned and work on some of the complaints.

I've heard anywhere from 5 to 6 hours. But you could easily get addicted to trying to perfect your runs and beating times on the leaderboards.

Honestly I'm not really sure. I started to work on the time trail and races part way through so that took up a good couple hours, and I've still got lots to work on.

I'm getting a 360 soon ( a good deal I must add), and this will probably be the first game I pick up.

YES. The remixes sound awesome too, but nowhere near as good as the original.

Still Alive?

It was not. Mirror's Edge's Still Alive > Portal's Still Alive
